Hey guys. Used this forum to move from New England to Texas a little over two years ago and everyone was very helpful and much appreciated. I'm 57 years old in decent shape not obese or any medical issues. Had the choice to go into trucking (School) or work in a refinery. Chose the latter and am looking at being out of a job in a couple months. Seriously, thinking I made a bad decision. I'm single, no immediate family so it may be the right choice. My question, I live in Rockport, thirty minutes out of Corpus Christi, one hour out of Victoria. My first question is what good companies are in this area? Appreciate all info, thanks in advance.

Probably a couple dozen companies to choose from.
Do you plan to attend a private cdl school? Being laid off, will the state pay for your school or will you need a trucking company school?

I will be attending the college in Victoria. The state and or the Fed will pay for it. I will be qualified for TAA as it is a plant that makes alumina with makes aluminum.

Several tanker companies will hire you if you get tanker/hazmat endorsements and TWIC ID Card.
Google for nearest TWIC office. TWIC is an ID card used for entry to military bases, chemical plants, sea ports, rail yards.
Let me go through my little notebook and see what I can come up with. You OK with tankers? Plenty of other type trucking if you're not interested in tankers.

    Boriqua and ExOTR Thank this.

I'll side with @Chinatown about running tankers. Living in Corpus you can either choose regional out/back or system. Many of the out/back runs let you stop by the house for your 10.

I have my TWIC actually applied and rcvd it after talking with someone in the employment office. Not exactly clear on all the different type of trailers. My greatest concern is being able to pay my bills. I'm aware the first year is rough and I would rather go in to a company and be there for the long haul. Really appreciate your responding.

You won't have any problem paying your bills with tankers. New cdl grads right out of school make real good paychecks the first year.
Check these and submit applications during the first week of cdl school. You don't have to wait until graduation. Some schools in Victoria train drivers for tankers in the oil fields, but i wouldn't do that right now because you can easily be laid off again and the pay is dropping.
    McKenzie Tank Lines
    Trimac Transportation
    Schneider Bulk
    CTL Transportation
    SVTN
    Superior-Carriers
    Tidewater Transit
All these hire new grads right out of school.

Thank you sir. I now have something to research. If I may, what do tankers haul?

Try Clean Harbors also. They usually require 12 months experience, but can bend the rules sometimes if you apply in person vs. the online app.

Depends on the contracts the company has; I've hauled acid, micro-wave popcorn bag glue, Bisquick flour, wood processing chemicals, you name it.

Some companies do a heart rate test for tanker work because you may have to climb the ladder to the top of the trailer to check dome lids, hook an air hose, etc. You can prepare for the heart rate test by doing stair step exercises; real simple.
