Hello, I received my CDL a few weeks ago, I'm studying for my tanker endorsement test, and in a few months I'll be moving to Phoenix. Once I'm there I'll apply ffor the background check for hazmat endorsement and test.

I spent two years working as a yard jockey and don't have much interest in hauling dry vans, reefers, or being out on the road for more than a day. Home nightly is a must so I'm interested in what companies in the Phoenix area will hire for new grads for tanker work and get me home every night. I suspect hauling milk and fuel would be the best options. I know Airgas is out in Phoenix but I don't know if they hire new grads for tanker work. I've been watching Indeed daily to see what companies are posting, I guess I'm asking here too in case anyone has any personal recommendations.

    Thanks.

Love’s/Gemini. I drive for them in OR and love it. Great company too.

What's their pay and schedule like?

Are their trucks manual or autos? Good condition? Slip seating?

I’m not sure how things are out there exactly. Things vary a little from store to store.

Pay in the PNW is $30/hr, plus $1/hr more for the larger trailer/nights/weekends. I think the rest of the country is $25/hr, probably with the same differentials. O/T after 40 hrs in a week.

I think most stores have a schedule like ours. 1 truck/trailer with 3 drivers, running 24/7. A day driver running 12 hrs, off Fri/Sat; a night driver running 12 hrs, off Sun/Mon; and a weekend driver running the 4-12s to cover the other driver’s weekends. Our start times are 0300 and 1500, but this varies store to store.

Manuals and autos. Equipment is in excellent condition.

There are also some sleeper positions with the company. Tankers doing DEF and a few doing fuel, and dry vans doing tires/etc.

Good luck with your search. It’s a great career field.

Go down to the local and try and get on with ABF or Safeway. Or plead your case to Cemex.

AirGas sometimes will hire a new grad and put him through a mentor program.
All locations don't do this, but some do.
    ~
Clean Harbors needs tanker drivers and drivers with hazmat endorsement.
Again, normally won't hire someone right out of school, but did communicate with one guy that was hired in Phoenix.

Heniff Transportation hires new cdl school grads. Nearest terminal to Phoenix is 100 miles or so away from Phoenix, but still in Arizona. Check with the company and ask.
    ~
Coastal Transport has a terminal in Phoenix. Used to hire new cdl school grads, but may have changed that policy. Call and ask.
ABF does have a training program for new drivers.
