Hey everyone my name is Mike and i have been studying everything i can find about truck driving for the past month and a half. I have been jobless and on unemployment for the past month and my background is automotive. i am no longer interested in doing that as a career anymore. I looked into truck driving because i have always been interested in it and i know they work hard and make decent money. I started reading on the trucking truth website and found that some companies pay for your training and after further review of the companies in ohio or close to ohio all of the things i read about the other companies makes me want to run and hide. I have only read like one or 2 things about Millis which were bad and the way i see it was mainly because of the person writing it was a dumbxxx. So i have a ton of questions and i love reading all of your posts especially mojo and baritone. So please help me out and let me know what to expect and hopefully i will get into a class in the next couple months. Nice to meet all of you and i hope to make some good friends.
New Guy getting crap together.

Welcome, continue reading all the threads and then decide for yourself. Don't allow a couple of bad experiences influence your decision. The company has to fit what your looking for before you should ever consider them. Good luck!

Just finished training myself...... spend some quality time on this board and you will get a picture of what Millis is all about.
Best wishes and best luck to you...... I don't think you can do much better out of the box than Millis, but wherever you land, good luck. -
The miles are there, espically right now - freight should be openning up with this next month. Dispatch is great during the week, ok at night, and a baby sitter on weekends (emergencies).
Hometime reqs are almost always on time, and it's a good raito compared to other larger INC.
The equipment is getting better, not that it was bad to begin with, but having a difficult economy to rebound from you can expect to see a few trucks with 600-800k on them. Shops are just that - like anywhere else, some good ones and some so so; depends on the workers.
The terminals are good to better than average. I can only think of one that doesn't have laundry facilites; showers are clean.
Insurance is a bit pricy. Bonuses are achivable. And the two aren't tied togther. BIG PLUS.
Most of the frieght is in good areas - Check out Jody's restraunt (just outside Tuscumbia, AL) outside (east of) Cherokee, AL & (west of) Courtland, AL; parking in the back and you might get stuck at SCA from time to time. Also Versalies, CT has some chance for an extended stay to just messing with your avability of drive time. A few other places to watch out for are grocery wearhouses - but that's a trucking standard, and the glass works - hit and miss there.
Time to eat. I'll be back to post more here in a bit. All in all this is a good outfit. -
Thanks guys. i did have two questions right out of the gate. #1 are you allowed to conceal carry while working? My wife is an Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper so she can carry anywhere anytime and she wanted me to get my ccw so i was just wondering if it is ok with millis or do they have rules against it. and #2 i saw that the training is monday thru friday does that mean since i live close to the training facility i can just go home on the weekends?
Thanks in advance i will def have more questions for you guys. -
I do not work for them (yet) BUT I do know that you cannot carry, and yes you can go home during training if you wish.

A CCW from Ohio will not be honored in every state. My CCW issued in Georgia is good in approximately 25 other states. Your wife can carry anywhere anytime in Ohio, but again another state does not have to recognize Ohio's LEO authority to carry. It's ate up like a soup sandwich I know but gun control laws in some states are harsh (not to mention unConstitutional). I hate that I can't even have my weapon in my vehicle where I work. I work on a federal installation and they say no guns. I'm a retired MP and former civilian police officer and I can't keep it secured in my truck.

Another thing to check Samurai. Your Department of Labor may pay your truck school fee for you through the Vocational Rehab programs they have. Here in Georgia they've sent a lot of folks through driving school who were being paid unemployment benefits. The sooner you get a job the sooner you come off unemployment. WIA was the main VocRehb program here. Federal money so maybe your state has it. I believe Millis will accept payment from them. They accept payment from the VA.

Thanks old mp i will look into that. And yes i know that not all states recognize the ccw. I just was wondering since i hear stories of robberies from truck drivers. I do not have a problem with paying for training. they pay me $400 a week to sit here and apply for jobs. I am just excited to try something new and have a new career.
