I'm 18 and a senior. I've been thinking about getting my cdl, this isn't something I necessarily want to do for a career but figured it be a good way to make some money and get me going for the next couple years. I've done some research on how to get your license but I'm still a little bit confused about the process. So if someone could give me the rundown on what's between me and getting a job somewhere at like a lumber yard doing delivery or anything like that, I'd really appreciate that. Thanks Yall!
New Guy, what does it take to get my cdl?

to start, go online and find the manual for your state and study it. go to the dmv and take the knowledge test. if you want class A you need to take 3, air brakes, combination, and general knowledge. they will give you a permit.
then there is the skills test, i would suggest using a school and they should be able to train you and test you, then just take the form after you pass back to the dmv and get your cdl. that simple.
i forgot, you do need to get your DOT medical card. i did after i did the written tests. most doctors offices should be able to, go online to find one near you. you will need your card it is as important as your permit/license. its a quick basic physical. -

Most states you can get your CDL at 18, but you can only drive within that state. Can't go interstate till you are 21.

My driving school didn't allow anyone under 21 either. Just FYI.
If you are getting your CDL for a agriculture job, then you are fine, theres no age limit. Repeat all the practice tests you can find, until your eyes bleed. The more you fail the test the more it costs ya and the longer you have to wait for a repeat. So just go ahead and over-prepare yourself. BTW don't bother with the online sites wanting money for the real test questions or a cheat sheet. The question and answers at each chapter of the CDL book ARE most of the questions on the test. Keep taking the free online practice tests and you are golden.
You will have your white slip now. Then practice stopping at a line, backing up perfectly straight, backing to a dock, get to know how much your trailer tires cheat. Then you outta be good on a driving test. Right before that comes the pre-trip test. Again over study. The test giver likes to throw curve balls cuz all questions are in the air and the test giver is usually moody, so know your stuff.Last edited: Aug 30, 2010
