I currently am not a truckdriver, but for two weeks during the summer drive grain harvest for the neighbor with his semi. We haul to a grain terminal on the Snake river in southeastern WA. The local O/O's make $.30/bushel to haul the 30 some miles to deliver to the terminal. I am getting to the point where I'm thinking of what I want to do after I retire from my real job. I'm thinking of buying an older truck and grain trailer and hauling grain for the 6 to 8 weeks of harvest and then doing some local flatbed hauling. The question I have is in your situation what are your operating costs per mile? I'm the type of guy that needs to know exactly what costs are, I know that there's going to be the unexpected expenses, but I'm looking for a little guidance in this. The state of WA is slowly getting rid of the farmer exempt status for truckdrivers, this year you need a DOT physical card and all truck need the owner name, city and state on them. It looks like before too long you will need a CDL which I don't oppose getting.
Thanks,
Bobg
