What about when ur on duty at a shipper throwing chains and working outside if ur a flatbedder or tanker or even shutting doors and walking inside to get paperwork. Well if it last 30 minutes doing all that which most of the time it does, then u got a full 8 hours to drive and not 6 or 5 after taking a couple hrs to tarp and chain etc.. I know some guys will just go off duty and then put 30 mins on duty or whatever to make it look legal but its not

7 and 3 or 8 and 2. And not using the hours against the 14 on either would help me get home sooner. I'm not sure of how it's all worded. I got a 14 hour violation for going on duty during a drive home, for breaking up an off duty personal conveyance break. Had to put in fuel there and then. Small tanks. That was my long day of the week, and I didn't feel good about stopping for 10 in IL, 4 hours from home.

Exactly man. I'm a major fan of the split. When we first went to elogs, i sort if understood the split. On paper, I only used it if I knew a 10 hr break was coming, like on those days i was trying to get home. After getting a log book violation, lol, the DOT in Indiana explained to me where I fouled up. He told me what I should have done to make it look good. It made cheating so much easier for a period of time when I needed to. That's the thing, when you learn and know the rules, you can bend them til they nearly break.....if you're an NFL fan, Bill Belichick is the perfect example of that lol

That's still not HOS forcing you to drive at midnight. The only thing that ever forced me to drive at midnight was poor planning and/or execution on my part

I haven't read the actual rule, just the summary from Post #1, but the times aren't set. The way it is worded the split break is any combination adding up to 10 hours providing the driver spends at least 7 hours in the sleeper and at least 2 hours off-duty.

... spending at least 7 [hours] in the berth...
...a minimum off-duty period of at least 2 hours...

    So, 7/3, 3/7, 8/2, 2/8, 7:45/2:15, etc.

Not a huge difference, but a bit more flexibility than before.
