Hey fellow Truckers. Im new in the truck driving game. Ive worked for GM the last 10 years. And as many of you know GM isnt doing the best rite now. So ive decided to follow a childhood dream of getting my own truck. I have no trucking experience. Ive just decided to pull from my 401K and purchase me a truck. Rite now Im lookn at a 04 freightliner a lil less than 500,000 miles. I wont be driving the truck. I ll be hiring a driver. I dont have any contracts lined up rite now. I dont have my own authority. So I guess my question is.. Do any of you guys have any advice? How hard is it finding a good driver? getting a good contract. Not interested in getting my own authority rite now..Should I be? Do you know of any good companies to get leased on with? I live in Dallas Tx. SO I guess im interested in running loads up and down 20 Tx La Ark Miss Ala Ga Tenn Fla Ky the carolinas anywhere in the south.

Well best of luck to you but heres my take. Alot of O/O's are struggling right now and they drive there own truck. I think it would be very hard to make any money for yourself after you pay the driver, pay for the truck and put money away for the truck for future repairs if that is your goals especially without your own authority. That being said it could possibly be done if you were doing something very specialized. Good Luck

I agree..........

check out Pacer Transport, out of Desoto. A friend of mine did exactly what you are thinking of doing, and he is doing fine. there are plenty of drivers available, just make sure you pick a good one, maybe one familiar with Pacer, or whatever company you choose.

I would leave your 401k right where it is. Good freight is hard to come by, the big companies are slashing rates, and Texas and the south have never been a good place to haul out of. Right now most of pacers flatbed freight is going to pay you $1.15 and $1.35/mile per pacers load board, and the van freight is around $1.00/mile out of Tx, La, and Ok. So at $1.35 minus about .85 for the truck that leaves you with .50 and subtract a drivers wage of around .35 that leaves you with .15 before you pay the drivers health ins, taxes, and all the other stuff you have to pay for an employee. I bet after all is said and done you might have enough left every weekend to have a steak dinner with the wife
Crotts Trucking Thanks this. -

If you'd be driving I'd say go for it. Putting a driver in your truck ONLY in an emergency. Keep your money earning 6% & save the headaches. Takes a special driver to treat our truck the way the owner would, they are HARD to find especially now days the way the industry slipped down hill. Good luck with your venture.

If someone else is driving I'd be shocked if you pulled $100 a week to yourself for keeps.
However, one place to look into is National Carriers. I hear they get you the driver and send half the take to the driver and half to you. Of course you have to pay for the truck, maintenance, and repairs out of yours. -
If you already had the truck and it was paid for, had your athority and some expercience in the business you might could make something on it but even at that just one truck is not going to be turning enough money to be worth fooling with.

Just wanted to say thanks to Crotts Trucking... I actually stay in DeSoto and if I could work out something with Pacer Transport that would be great..
