Greetings. This is a great tool for information, which is what I need. I live in Houston area and am overwhelmed by all this information overload I am digesting for this decision making process. Which company? Company training or private? I dont mind making a time committment (tuition reimbursement) as long as im treated fair and get miles. I think I want to lease as soon as possible but there are horror stories also about that. I also heard that overseas positions (KBR, etc) is the best dollar answer.
I/m recently divorced and have no constraints to be home any more. Im 55, so a lot of loading/unloading (heavy) probably wouldn/t work either. I've heard Stevens horror stories, but also heard that they have the best leasing partner (Alliance, I believe)... Schneider seems most accomodating to me right now as long as I drive bulk for them, but I want to know if there are other companies that would allow me to hub out of Houston. I take it Swift, JB Hunt are ones not to pursue. Please help/any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. If you have time to make a decision, select at least 5 or 6 companies that hire in your area. Read the notes here. Talk to the recruiters; interview them with at least 25 questions you design to cover information that is important to you. The most important things to you need to be covered by at least 2 or 3 questions worded differently and at different times in the "interview". Then go to a local truck stop and ask the drivers. Verify your recruiter answers by asking the drivers some of the same things. Narrow it down to a couple of companies and then work to pick the one that is best for YOUR situation. All the companies you mentioned , just like the many you didn't, have good and bad points. You need to choose what is best for you. I may love a company and you could hate it because it doesn't meet your needs. Good luck!

If you train with a company you are obligated to them. Check out in-state community collages for cdl training, but try to make sure they are accredited.

Tanks are a good way to go for your area. You will not be hurting for job opportunity and should you decide to go OTR in the chemical tank area you will have no problem getting home. Schnieder has a good training program but they do not pay as well as some of the other tanker companies.
