Hello there, I am fairly new to the forum (a couple of days) and this would be my first post.

    A little about me:
-Been behind the wheel since age 11 (regular cars) since my dad wanted me to learn basic things since I was a very young boy.
-Started driving medium duty trucks back in my country at age 14.
-By age 16 I was able to handle a 30 ft straight truck for my grandfather's business.
-At age 18 I was introduced to formal trucking (this still back in my country)
-Have been a Medium duty (non CDL) tow truck driver-operator for the last 1.5 yrs in the US (this would be my only verifiable driving job in the US I would have)

    My current situation:
-Just got my Class A CDL
-Just had a baby w/wife on New Years
    -No Class A experience
-Really need to start making money ASAP
-Trying to be as much around for my new family (which translates to avoiding OTR)

I know applying doesn't hurt and the worst that can happen is I am told no because of lack of experience.

Is there any company out there that it is not as strict with the 1 yr OTR or general experience pre-requisite that would hire me???

Thanks in advance for your responses and my apologies for the looooong post!

just my opinion for what its worth..years ago when I started this would have worked ,nowadays? dont know..try smaller mom and pop companies with tandem, triaxle trucks ..example..dump,vacuum,water,milk,roll-off garbage trucks something along that line or depending on where you live maybe tractor trailers hauling grain or maybe dumps? explain your deal maybe somebody will give you a try to get the ball roll rolling for you..years ago this would have worked nowadays maybe not esp due to insurance but I feel it would be worth a try...good luck

    Welcome.

OK that doesn't matter in the real world unless you prove it to the employer - which is what happened to me.

Congrats on the kid, but why did you even bother with trucking if you want to be around home?

Yes there is but you have to find them local to you, seeing you didn't put in where you are from in your profile, it is hard to have someone make a suggestion where to go.

As for the otr and all that, I don't get where an OTR driving experience is more important than local work, I do a lot of local work and it is far more harder than OTR was for me.

The thing that gets me is that people don't get the experience thing, I understand you do but how many think the license is a green light to a new big bucks job?

As suggested there is a lot of things you can do like dump, roll off, milk and so on but how hard you want to make money will depend on you.

How did you get your CDL? Thru a school? What area do you live? A new driver coming out of school has a decent chance of getting on with a big company with some training period. As suggested in earlier posts try a farmer, small companies where you will be a name not a driver number. Also might want to try posting an ad on craigslist explaining your circumstances and maybe you will get lucky and someone will read it thats either looking for a driver or may know someone who needs one. There are numerous driver help wanted classifieds you can post or respond too. Try a few of these for starters ,www.Monster.com, www.Indeed.com, Craigslist, www.helpwanted.com, www.truckerclassifieds.com, www.bigrigjobs.com, www.truckjobseekers.com, www.careerbuilder.com/Jobs/MS/Keyword/Local-Truck-Driver/ . Need to put where you're from in your thread so you may be better served as for suggestions of companies in your area.

    Congrats on the new baby!!:biggrin_25519:

I'm exactly you dude, just got my Class A, used to do Medium duty tows, got a kid on the way and have no "real" Class A experience. As your already aware from school or even your road test, pulling a 53' trailer is easier than a Med duty wrecker with a dump or a bus on the hook, they have a better turning radius and respond slower so backing is easier BUT just because WE know that most T/T drivers would assume the opposite and not consider that experience valid. You could always stay in towing, and do Class A tows or not. The experience I'm having is if your going to do local driving with a fresh CDL A then route delivery companies are the friendliest to the newbs (Beer, Coke, Pepsi etc). Most of the others will want the guys with OTR experience which is understandable. The route drivers start early as crap and your constantly in and out of your truck and store's so it's a crap job for the seasoned guys which forces those companies to hire us :) which is fine by me. As the other guy said, a lot of the B jobs may take you which I'm not against a straight job BUT I've read of people that got a class A, then drove B trucks and a year or two later went for a class A position and as far as the company is concerned your still a rookie A driver, which would technically be true.

We can't help you if we don't know your city/state.

Did you go to a CDL school?

Hello and thanks for taking the time of answering my post.

I am more than aware than my experience (since is not verifiable) will not do anything for me in the industry in terms of hiring. I am in the other hand glad I have it since in terms of driving skills puts me fairly close to being a good driver.

Thanks man! Well, the reason why I got into trucking is because after putting a lot of thought into what I want my career to be and after working office jobs and owning different types of businesses I realized that am 26 yrs old. Just had a baby and more responsibilities and a larger financial security need are knocking on the door, I realized that a job that cannot be replaced by a machine is a great bet.

Plus, as a last resort I would be willing to putting road time, but it would suck to not be around for the baby in his early stages.

Currently living in NY, but moving back to Rhode Island in the next month or so...

According to what I think, OTR is required by a lot of companies because by nature it would put you in far more diverse driving conditions and scenarios that should help the driver gain more "experience" (which doesn't work on everybody. But than again I might be wrong.

I do not believe it should be that big of a deal either.

How likely am I to get hired at dump, roll off, milk or grain driving companies when I just got my license?

Regarding how hard I want (NEED) to make money, either term is a great deal for me right now. I want/Need to provide for my family in the best possible way and trucking I believe is a good fit for me since I enjoy driving big rigs!

    Hello RiskyBusiness:

Got my CDL on my own since i had previous rig driving skills.

Did have to pay a school a minimum of two classes since they would bot rent me their truck for the road test unless I did.

I will try the helpful resources you've posted and we'll see how it goes!

BTW my area would be RI, MA area!

Thanks for the congrats on my baby :)

You had a baby with your wife or did she do it on her own.

If you are wanting to drive locally, to be home with the baby, you need to do LTL companies and also companies that deliver building supplies and the like. Home Depot, Lowe's. They don't pay as much but they get you home. Expect 15 per hour or so. The LTL are go. I worked with Brown's out of Kansas City and made runs to Omaha every night. 6 hours of work 175 per day.

We could be more specific if you provide information as to where you live now. And I am curious as to your home country. I may want to visit and you can give me the straight dope on where the best looking girls are that like middle aged, short, fat, men with no teeth.
