Selling out of my business and thinking of going back on the road. I still have my CDL and current medical card, but no recent OTR. Drove in the Navy Seabees as an Equipment Operator and a short stint with Schneider National, but that was over 10 yrs ago. I have driven since then, locally for a friend, but no long haul/otr or anything really documented. I'll have the money and credit to buy a truck, but without recent experience could I be an owner operator?

Yes. You wirk for yourself and make your own rules. Now if you sign onto a company, that's a different story

If you own a truck, a lot of companies will be interested. Look at Conway Truckload, among others. CNT has been a good fit for me. I'm an Independent Contractor with them for about 30 months now. Last month, June and July actually, I averaged 3,250 miles/week. Best to you.

The lack of current driving exp or otr is going to hurt you unless you can find a small company that might wave the one or two year requirement. Unless your friend can provide some proof. most insurance companies want the one year exp. The big companies are self insured so they can do the 6 month gig. All depends on what you want to do. You can haul logs or such locally.

Many big companies require recent experience. Once you've been out of trucking a few years, many companies look at you as having no experience. So you may have to go to school again, even though you know how to drive.
I've been off the road 3 years due to family obligations (elderly parents ). So, I might be facing a similar situation. But I do have 20 years experience. I don't plan on going to a school. In my case, I have seen companies that will accept a few years experience within the last 10 years. That should work, unless my dad lives past 100 or so.

If EO2 has his own rig, and does qualify for insurance coverage, he won't be an employee. I think that might open doors more readily than applying for a company driver spot. Like I/C, or get an authority and go full O/O.

Check around, Ken. If you have to do a refresher, no problem, just do it. It's a heck of a lot cheaper and less risky than buying a truck. Of course, driving fleet trucks, forced dispatch and 1 day off/7days worked isn't a whole lot of fun. Whatever your choice, come on out! Best. J

I was in San Diego (CBU-405), and then Japan, and finally PW Transportation at (former) NAS Dallas.
