I taught my sons that they have to learn from other people's mistakes b/c life is too short to make/learn from your own.
In the case of this trucking industry, I was frustrated that the knowledge about how to do it and be profitable was hard to come by. So I had a serious conversation with some old timers...I didn't have to get a degree, I didn't have to take a class, to learn than many O/O's end up with the same $$ in their pocket as the company guy. That was all we needed to know to make the decision to stay company and to just keep our eyes and ears open for the right company b/c in another year or so it will be time to move on from where we are.
Perhaps if we were in our 20's and just getting started, O/O would make sense, but in our circumstances, it would just be foolish. The learning curve is too steep, we don't have that much time left, and we don't have anything to prove, so we'll enjoy the scenery and look out for the 4-wheelers.

You really should look at this beyond one trip or being "in the whole for the week". You have to be financially prepared when something breaks.
