I stumbled across this website by mistake and finally decided to join after reading all the helpful information in these forums. A little background information. I'm a 30 year old male currently living in Maryland! I'm currently in school for my CDLs which I graduate on February 24th 2016. Last August I stumbled across a deal on a 2001 Peterbilt 379 with a recent overhaul, brakes and rears done, replaced clutch and great tires. So I purchased it out and out. Tomorrow I'm going to look at a 2005 Utility reefer, Thermo King unit with 8100 hours on it. It holds -15 with no problems. All aluminum wheels and great tires on the trailer. I will also be buying it out and out with no payments as well. Now to the info I'm looking for.
    (1) Are there any insurance companies you guys would recommend for me to go through?
    (2) Are there any brokers or Load Boards that you guys could recommend to me for the Maryland are. (I'm willing to run anywhere but trying to stay on the east coast as much as possible)
    (3) Would you guys suggest a get a reefer or dryvan?
    (4) What's the best course of action to go through to get my Own Authority?
    (5) Are there any organizations you would suggest that I should join?
    (6) Any other info or suggestions you could offer will be greatly appreciated. image.jpeg

Well, you're adventuresome. Reminds me of me in 1976 ! Went to truck school, bought a cab over Pete used leased on with American Red ball movers and I was off !

Getting your own authority isn't too difficult. Or you can use a 3rd party provider who will do things for a fee.

I suggest leasing on both truck and trailer with a small ESTABLISHED co. That way, they will do the finding of loads and paperwork etc. This is advised because as a beginner, you will be overwhelmed with the driving aspect and don't need all the extra headaches with booking loads and finding out the ins and outs of this biz.

Good luck, lots of info on here. You'll need 5 grand anyway to get going. Call around for insurance quotes. It will cost more since you're a beginner.

Thanks for the reply. I'm out of Maryland though so KY to Ca won't do me any good.

Thanks a lot for your response. Do you have any companies that you would recommend for me to lease on to? Being as though I have no experience will there even be any companies even willing to put me on?

I think you should consider getting a tanker to haul Hazmat.

-15 on your reefer is not cold enough. Are you sure about that? If it only cools to -15 you have an issue and will not haul any frozen beef or seafood. Beef is generally -45 and Fish minimial-30 The freezer on my boat goes to -55 and I would never let it on a trailer with a max cold of -15. Youreally need to run it longer and make sure.

Are these Fahrenheit temps? Why does it have to be so far under freezing? I don't run reefer so I have no idea, it seems strange to me.
