I got in before the deadline but I was looking at the training registry the other day just to see what it would have cost. Prices varied wildly for the online providers, but I did see one that was offering the online hazmat class for as low as $60.
New Requirements for first time Hazmat applicants?

That was my experience the first two times. But a year ago I renewed and the test was just stupid easy. There were only twenty questions and they were all obvious and easy. Three of the twenty were the same question. Do you use triangles, smudge pots, or flares if you break down and have class 8 placards? Do you use triangles, smudge pots, or flares if you break down and have class 3 placards? Do you use triangles, smudge pots, or flares if you break down and have class 2 placards?

Here in Florida the test is like 20-30 questions. I renewed my Haz several months ago and only did the test and fingerprints. Here you can do it all in one appointment at the DMV. I can foresee a future “shortage” of HZ-endorsed drivers with the new regs in place since drivers most likely won’t want to bother with a $200 course and $200+ CDL renewal.

A halfway decent company will cover your expenses, all 3 of my tanker companies covered mine

West Virginia is requiring a road test in addition, but currently have no protocol in place (yeah that’s WV for you) That word came to me directly from DMV admin.

A road test just to get your haz?

You wasn't grandfathered. NO ONE IS or WAS. When BUSH created the TSA in 2002, EVERY CDL HM HOLDER SINCE has had to apply with the TSA (aka Lockheed Martins Security Division) B4 the DMV would allow you to keep it. YES!, I said Lockheed Martin. READ the TSA HAZMAT application & see. 1.) Retake the HM @ DMV & PASS. THEN 2.) Go to the nearest TSA Office because they don't have a window @ the DMV for TSA's TWIC < PERMISSION TO WORK ID, or Hazmat which is dumb. APPLY for the endorsement so they can do a federal background check. ANY FELONIES & it will be denied. It's a simple process. MANY drivers with clean records who had HM for years & years was denied it by TSA via background checks.

Only certain felonies. Some of which are OK if they are old enough.
FYI: In Georgia, and possible other states, you have to pass the background check before they will let you to take the test.tscottme Thanks this. -
Here in Florida you can apply for your Haz AT THE DMV. They make you fill out the application online and then you show up to the DMV for the test and fingerprints. They will fingerprint you at the dmv, you don’t have to go to one of those identogo places. However for my TWIC I did go to a identogo location. Florida is one of several states that allows for fingerprints at the DMV.tscottme Thanks this.

Just google TSA HazMat disqualifications.
MOST felony convictions DO NOT prevent you from passing HazMat background check. Felonies involving murder, terrorism, explosives, smuggling will fail a background check.
