People should all be trained on a manual so they have more job opportunities. For trucking schools I guess the auto is a selling feature for the few folks who may be overwhelmed by the concept of 3 pedals.

 

It's been that way in Sask for a while, as it should be.

 

Rule was in BC also a decade ago.

 

Been that way for at least a few years in Alberta too. Suprised Ontario is so far behind the 8-ball.

 

I followed a newbie with a stick I was about two truck lengths behind him climbing the 9% grade as you approach hwy 1 on bc hwy 17 . He missed a gear doing about 25 km/hr he lost all speed and I had to stop on hill because he rolled backwards about 25 feet almost jackknifed . Needless to say automatics are better in some cases even though they allow people who shouldn’t be driving big truck a job.

 

Three pedals and only two feet, what do I do?!
Most of us only use that third pedal to get going anyways.
My 2019 Mustang GT has automatic rev matching when I downshift, why can't tractors have this feature? Rev matching while downshifting is what screws the newbie up most of the time.

 

True. The issue is according to road test standards in Ontario, you need to downshift every gear from 10th gear all the way down to 2nd gear and stop. That's really hard even for experienced drivers.

 

I beg to differ.
Watching for fresh or stale lights is something every professional driver should be doing. If the light ahead is stale or red, start slowing and downshifting. Chances are by the time you get there the light will turn green, your still rolling, no stopping.
The worst habit I see is drivers who start out in something other than first and rev the engine to let the clutch out. With over 2000ftlb of torque, this practice is not necessary. Use the lowest gear and simply ease the clutch out until you get moving and shift accordingly. If you are stalling then you either let the clutch out too quickly or you are in too high s gear.
