New to this, now a proud (well, as long as I make payments) owner of 2001 IH 4700LPX. Lotta words for a 20' box truck. Went with this because we (wife-partner-friend) sell at Renn Fairs and we decided that a motor home was not able to handle 3 tons of stuff needed to sell at a fair. Also needed something to sleep/cook/work in that could handle driving as we plan to get more miles when our daughter finishes HS and we leave the house.
Because we are neither fish or fowl the state of CA can't figure what we are. Since we work for ourselves and are not for hire they started out with a class A -not for compensation-not for cl B-restricted to towing single trailer coachs only. Wow- but we were told to get a CDL physcial. Got one, took to dmv, told we didn't need (150.00) gone. Need DOT-don't need so we got one anyway. The side of our cab reads --PRIVATE NOT FOR HIRE Ca # Dot # and at the bottom of the door 01ST5150 (O1 Skwirl transport-5150(little crazy)
Learning about air brakes (we have) rules, log book (#### confusing for a private not for hire)-they still don't know if I need one). Will say one thing, the truck is nice. 466E IH diesel, 4 speed auto. cruse, AC.
Mostly I just want to see what other people do about problems they encounter so I can avoid them. That way I can make my own mistakes.

I avoid CA but I think they are confused . Do you stay within CA ? Go across the state line and you fall under FMCSA regulation . You would be considered commercial .Most states and FMCSA require a medical card if operating a CMV over 10,000 lbs GVWR . But like I said , I don't know anything about CA and plan on keeping it that way .

I think you are right. We do plan to error on the side of caution because the gov/state get enough money with giving them more in the form of fines
