No one's mentioned the L.A. traffic coming into the port and then leaving the port. If going north, you have to deal with the 405 fwy from Long Beach to San Fernando valley. east is as bad. Or south too.

Back when this thread was current Walmart had just contracted with my employer for us to do local runs between LA/Long Beach ports and its South Gate and Eastvale (aka Mira Loma) warehouses. We got paid $300/day regardless of whether we only worked 6 hours or 14 hours (shifts averaged about 10-11 hours). The ports were a real mess back then. I worked second shift. I'll never forget one evening when the port hostlers refused to set any chassis down for us to use. I noticed one over in a corner that they left exposed if you were willing to back under it at a 90-degree angle. I can't resist a backing challenge. When one of them saw me doing a bunch of maneuvering to attempt that, he came over and lifted it up onto a stack, out of reach.

If you want to work hard and make a lot of money. LTL it’s the way to go.

It might help potential LTL drivers decide whether to pursue it or not if you added a little more specificity to "work hard." There's a big difference between "start your shift at midnight, push super-heavy dollies around on gravel nightly year-round (even uphill sometimes?), and chain a dozen tires up nightly six months of the year" and "constantly drive 70 hours/week 52 weeks/year." The latter looks much easier to me than the former and doesn't qualify as "hard work" in my opinion, but a lot of people would probably call it that I would guess.

The ports present some unique challenges you don't find at ordinary warehouses, but once you get acquainted with the way things work there, yes, it's an easy job.
