My hubby is unemploed. I have a decent job but we will never get where we want in life at this rate. We have commited to our decision to pursue otr trucking, but wonder how to start. He needs to get trained first, should he contact a company for help with his cdl & training or go to school? Any pointers for us would be appreciated. Thanks.

Basically you have 2 choices, go to an approved school and pay yourself, or, sign on with a company that trains you and then make a commitment to that company VIA a contract. If you bail before the contract expires (usually a year), they will hunt you down and do anything/everything to collect the Full amount owed. The best way to make good $$$ as a husband/wife team is to NOT have a residence/utilities payments and live out of the truck and run hard and bank that money. You can take few days off every 6 weeks.
I don't know your home status, are you a homeowner or renter ? Kids ? Commitments at home ? -
I did see a site that offered a deal on a 160 hour course, one spouse pays and the other is free...cant recall the school though.
Smlynn Thanks this. -
Don't over think the school thing! They are all pretty much the same and are just there to get you your license and prepare you to go with a trainer of your chosen company.
You guys will make really good money as a husband/wife team and will be treated like gold! However, it is very, very, very hard work! Teams run 7000 miles a week! You will make good money though if you can hack it! My wife and I ran team and are now retired. I will be 40 years old in 4 years!

Thxs for all the input, much appreciated. Chompi your story is a real motivator. Ironically We moved for my hubby's job, leaving a condo we rent. The condo is in a great location, so we think we'll keep it for visiting family and friends. In our minds we invision busting butt and taking a week off once or twicea yer to visit home. Is that ok? Also say we've been on the road for a few months straight and take few days off, where do you park the rig? Can you park rigs in campgrounds?

As a former team driver I can tell you that each week varies (unless you are on a dedicated route). Some weeks you "may" run 7000 miles but in reality the average is closer to 5000 miles per week.
Pay scales vary but as a team operation you should be earning at least .40 cpm (split) to start. Once you have a year or 2 experience pay scales should be between .50 cpm and .60 cpm. The higher end of the scale will be for hazmat or expedited "high priority" type freight.
Parking the truck in a camp ground is not advisable. Some camp grounds have low hanging branches, tight turns, limited parking spaces and weight limits on the roads.
Companies may require that you park the company truck at a terminal when you want to take time off for security reasons. It will also give the carrier a chance to service the truck while you are taking time off.
A couple of parking suggestions for you; Casinos may offer a secure place to park your truck while you are staying with them. Hotels may also offer a secure place to park your truck (provided you are staying with them).
Renting a car and a hotel room once every few months will be more affordable than paying for an apartment or mortgage all year long. -
I still dont get why people would team just 1 more way for the company to screw drivers over. Why in the world would you want to be making 20cents a mile when you could be making over 30 solo

Here is a thought, Lease/Buy each of you a truck, and just convoy. Music indrustry does it a lot. Steady loads to the same place.
