new to 18 speed trans ?

To give you guys a quick scenario, when Im in 18th gear with the splitter forward and I drop speed to like 60mph rpm's like at 1300, what the proper way to get to 17th gear (splitter back) take out the shifter stick then back in? or let off the throttle bring splitter to the BACK position let of the throttle then back ON again, Ive tried this second way but I hear a faint grinding noise after bringing the splitter back prior to letting off the throttle and back on again. thanks or any help
