Lurch I appreciate your opinion, and agree with you. I'm not looking for a career in trucking, only a way to enjoy making some extra money; something I'm sure that will eventually get me in trouble, with whichever company I hired on with.
I also agree with your idealism about the satisfaction evolved with other work. This is something I'll have to soul search for until I find it.
I had hoped training for a CDL would have been less intensive. For instance something that I could sit down and read about in a weekend or two and then apply for. Paying $3,000 is out of the question, as is signing an 18 month contract. I don't have sufficient time to reap the benefits of that investment.
Rob- I attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I am hoping to attain a masters degree in Finance from UVA or UFL, however the ultimate deciding factor will be who offers me the most money to come to them. There are $80k starting positions in personal finance waiting on the other side of that degree, which is only one reason I cannot afford to put off school for more than a year- being that's how far ahead I already am.
I had hoped to dabble in a job that will push me personally farther than a desk job can. Some people spend their entire lives not knowing what they're made of. I think a job like trucking can really teach a person about themselves.
Still thinking, thanks again for everyones input.

Example, the company I work for. Unless the delivery run was short (250 miles or so), we were afforded enough time that a single driver could easily get there a day early.
Run your hours to the wall, take a 34... do it again. Take your days off.. no problems.
Or, manage your hours and just go until your time off. Lots of resting time.
Company set the trucks to 62mph, and ALSO set the dispatch software to understand that 62 means 'take your time'.
Am I gonna make 40K this year? Ha! Probably closer to 25 - but that's fine for me.
Take a look and see if there are government grants that would apply to you. I used one to get through school (probably not available to you, sadly).
(not casting asparagus at you, just an off-hand comment)
Not that I'd be happy moving to Kalifornia, eitherthestoryteller Thanks this. -
