I am looking into getting my own rig. Ive been giving the opportunity to get one from my uncle whos been over the road for 20+ years. The problem is that I've only been trucking for a year and a half. And all of my time is had been Day Cab only. While in Texas I worked Oil field, and I ran to New Mexico and few over night operations. Now I work for a LTL freight company in Missouri, which is not bad. But there is no future if i want to get ahead. I've never ran over the road but I adopt quickly. Any advice is appreciated

there is no future in ANY gtrucking company.

you drive a truck. the only further your going it lots and lotsa miles. and being the captain of your own ship. there's no ranking higher or lower.

I live just down the road, just North of Jeff City.
Your lack of experience may hinder you in finding a good carrier to get on with, depending on what you want to do that is...

I am in NY and i lived in Columbia Mo for 7 years. My best frieght comes out of your area. You will have no issue finding loads out.But getting back to Missouri is tough AND A BIT CHEAP AT TIMES..Keep in mind.In trucking the freight pays BIG from west to the east.It is horrible from East to West.It has been like this forever.

Knowing what i no now.I would be all over the O/O living where you live. Those companies around there STARVE PEOPLE..Sorry,but alot of them are slave driven.Been there done that when i parked my truck.Within 2 months i fired my rig back up and never looked back..

Has your uncle done well ? If so, you have a great resource right there. That's more than a lot of people have going for them when they start.

He has done pretty well. I've seen his paperwork, checks stubs, and cost of truck. Makes around $200k+ year for last 3 since he started owner ops. He said there is nothing wrong with working for a company being a driver with their equipment. But he told me that in the 11 years he has been with Crete that what he made as a owner op pretty much sums up the amount of the 8 years before that. And i know not all of that is take home. I'm happy with the cash i make from the company i work with now. But If i could double or even triple my income with the same amount of work. i rather do that. Im still pretty young (24) and I'm trying to get ahead now. It's still a few months down the road from now. I've talked it over with my wife and she agrees that it will suck that i will be gone but if I can bust my ##### for a few years and get ahead then later on down the road I wont have to work as hard. Or i guess that the dream atleast.

Devide Gross by 3= net. 200 k gross might be low for a full working year. Do the rest a favor, get rid of this readiness to suffer and bust smth, learn to negotiate from beggining, make good money from the start otherwise it is called ratecutting and does not do anybody good. Too many are willing to be out there to pay their bills, i want to retire by 37

As far back as i can remember. The old timers always said that...We the driver get a 1/3 of the ''gross''..And low and behold has been like that since i went into my own business, give or take a few...This year i am around 150,000 Gross.I will bet money my NET will be around 50,000 for 7 months of work...I am finishing up on my year end today.I will let you no.

In years past it has always been around the .33 or 1/3 mark..Amazing them old timers. They were smart cookies.
