Hello everyone. My name is Lazarus Jackson.Me and my nephew will be forming a llc next month to get Authority and to put a 26 foot box truck on the road in Spring 2022.My nephew has 3 years of flat bed OTR and one year Teamsters Union Bronx local semi experience. He will be the driver as I have no trucking experience and I will be in charge of everything else.2021 will be all about us saving minumum 2k a month and establishing the foundation of our business credit and obviously attaining our DOT,MC,BOC,etc. The plan is to get a 7a SBA Equipment loan and to be be able to pay for insurance upfront when we register the truck. We are in NYC and I have business experience and we dont have family out of state to avoid the extreme insurance premiums that's why 2021 is all about saving as much liquid and building a D&B profile to a respectable level before even looking at a truck. My question is should I form the LLC in NY initiallyb next month or form one in Mississipi or Ohio,Indiana because I'm looking to cut costs.Any advice is appreciated and I plan on learning alot from these threads and not commenting much but soaking up wisdom and hopefully be able to network. Thanks for reading. And thanks for providing all of your efforts to all of us citizens who dont appreciate truckers like my nephew but rely on the toilet paper being in stock!

A serious question, why an llc?

also did you do any market research for the freight you want to haul and the truck you are looking to get into?

also why not go to a semi, maintaince costs are close to the same in the long run.

why don’t you get a license and get into the truck too?

Well to answer why a LLC -is because it is a business and I used to be in real estate and I know how to obtain proper funding so sole proprietorship is out of the question plus it's time to teach my nephew business besides driving as that's only one aspect of the industry.
We actually arent opposed to semis .I'm trying to let him make that judgement call being he is the young man driving and if we werent in NYC it would be 100% semi. But 26 feet box trucks are plentiful here regional and fine start with one box truck the next will be a semi and vice versa.also,to keep that box truck running I have a brother with semi experience as well tho his class is expired who can do one or two loads on saturday and Sunday.
As far as freight,no reefers to begin with.obviously,no flat bed hauling steel as my nephew is not to eager to do another year of that so we would broker, register with shippers out carrier packet, and search the load boards for what loads are beneficial to our company at a profit.
I honestly prefer semis but it seems after 3 years non stop his young body needs a 6 month break with the box truck. Hope I answered and it makes sense to another person or do you see pitfalls that I'm not aware or looking at.and i cant drive legally because of my vision and I have seizures at least twice a year.i wish I could drive or wish when I was younger I did.i did tow truck flat beds instead

Wouldn't local/regional in a box truck require a lot of fingerprinting of the freight by the driver?

To be perfectly honest unfortunately The Union already has him unloading a huge contract with a major fast food chain throught the tri-state area now so even I'm assuming the box truck will be no different other than less freight which I'm sure hell be happy.its better than his steel flat bad days strapping heavy tarps they rain, snow, etc and better than unloading the semi he is now.I am assuming that is the case but if it is he doesnt have a problem with it.I hope I answered the question and understood exactly what you meant because I'm assuming fingerprinting freight simply means unloading it.if I'm wrong please correct me so I can look up what I need to know to know the rules.

You are correct. Fingerprinting is the driver having to touch the freight, either loading or unloading or both. Do not see too many box trucks get loaded with a forklift. As long as your driver is good with that, great!
