Today I received my approval for KLLM. I ship out to orientation in Atlanta, GA on 1/4/09. Orientation actually starts on 1/5/09 but I am looking at an 8 hr bus ride.
I am open to any advise that you KLLM road warriors have to offer. Please make it positive. I strongly believe that what we put into life we get back. There's enough negativity in this world already. I've been successful in my careers because I avoid negativity as much as possible and surround myself with successful people.
For 22 years the Marine Corps provided me the opportunity to see the world, KLLM will afford me the opportunity to see my country from the cab of their trucks, and get paid for it. What a country we live in!
New to the KLLM Team and open to advise

I hope you're going OTR and not on the Southeast Regional. I worked OTR for 6 months and really liked KLLM. I just needed to be closer to home and not out for so long, so I nailed a local job. KLLM is a good company and much better for starters that any of the others. I can't tell you much about Atlanta's Orientation, because I went through Jackson. But, I would assume as in Jackson it'll be three days of paperwork, policy and get aquainteds. Then you'll be assigned a trainer and leave from there. You will be dispatched out of Jackson if you are going OTR. Hope you get a good trainer. 6 weeks seems like a long time, but you'll get routed through Jackson for your road test and upgrade test before you know it. Good Luck and Semper Fi!

Yes I am going OTR. I would take it no other way. My primary duties in the Marine Corps was that of a Tractor-Trailer Operator as well as an instructor then on to a Combat Marksmanship Instructor. I just have to learn the civilian way of doing OTR.

I had never heard of KLLM. How big of a company are they? I am starting school Monday and have pre hires from Werner, Prime, and FFE.
From what I read there is not too many horror stories on here. This is quite interesting!
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! -
I read someone asking if KLLM had no touch freight, is this true. Being 50 I'm not the man I used to be LOL I could unload, just might cut bigtime into my 14 hour. Also, How does the LUMPER thing work? Do they ride along with thru the tour of duty? I'm not the biggest socilite, and would prefer to be alone on the road to avoid personality clashes. I'm easy going and all but some personalities I would rather aviod if you know what I mean.

I believe Lumpers are picked at the sight. As far as finger printing freight I am not sure about that. For me I would view as much needed exercise. I am not in the busy to become a millionaire, just love the independence of it and to see my country.Belton Bandit Thanks this.

Smoking Preference ---- Do you have a choice of a smoking trainer or a non smoking trainer? I was told by Werner recruiter is if you wanted a non smoking trainer you would have to wait for 2-3 days. Seems way more smoking truckers than not she said. Does KLLM give you a choice? Seems it would be a big issue pairing smokers with non smokers for 6 weeks.
-
That is exactly what I was thinking. It will be hard enough getting used to sleeping in a moving truck, but if you are no non smoker, the smell will just make it very hard to sleep.
I would have no problem waiting for one if that is what it took. 6 weeks is a long time!
