Hello all, I am glad I found this forum. I worked as a retail manager for over 15 years and I am now starting to hate it. I noticed something about myself, I love driving! I want to get into the cargo transport business. How do I get started? Where do I sign up for work? I see Chevrolet Expresss 3500 going for as much as $14k. Will I make enough to pay insurance/van payments (financing)/enough to cover maintenance and fuel? I like the idea of working Mon-Fri as early as 5am - 3pm or 4pm. Weekends off, Holidays off. Etc. Those are some of the reasons why I want to become an owner/operator

Not to be rude, but you have no clue about the business, there is a good chance you will go broke. Go work for a company, learn, then decide if it is worth the investment. Many local jobs have weekends and holidays off. I work monday to friday starting at 6am, its fairly common

DieselDave, if you are referring to the scheduling :) my buddy is a truck driver. Hes gone for weeks. I only want to do local runs for now and if I enjoy it I may consider getting my CDL.

Ajohnson, you are right I have no clue whatsoever. I did some research, watch videos on youtube about what other drivers are saying about their driving jobs. They dont talk much about their earnings. I just want to know if its worth leaving my $16/hr job

Sounds like you're talking about a metro hotshot delivery type service which is a whole other animal from the typical "trucking operation". I would not know where to begin putting a 1 ton van to work and it's rate structure and business model and such. There is another sub-forum here that deals more with "hotshot" type service. Maybe you can get some info there.

I'm in Orlando, FL area. I am quite sure there are jobs for everyone even part-time to begin with. I am quite confident that I can work my way up to full-time (more loads/mileage)
