Hi everyone, I'm new to trucking and I am very interested in car hauling. I am interested in a company called Cassens Transport Company. I know most car haul companies will want at least a few years of experience in order to get hired, and I completely understand that it makes perfect sense. However, there are two Cassens terminals located very close to me, and I visited their website and under the employment section, it states...

    1. Must have a valid "A" CDL (Commercial Driver's License) from the applicant's state of residence
    2. Must have one year of truck driving experience with tractor-trailer equipment; OR, BE A GRADUATE OF AN ACCREDITED TRUCK DRIVING SCHOOL

Along with the other basic qualifications required for all drivers.. There is no age requirement or anything..

This is very interesting to me and gives me hope that I might be able to get a job with Cassens as soon as I graduate from Truck Driving School. I plan on going to Great Lakes Trucking School, it is a 14 week course with 600 hours of training, so it is not one of those crappy driver mills. I want the best training I can possibly receive and I am willing to pay big bucks to get it, because I plan on making this a career and it will be one of the best investments I will ever make, or so I believe. But anyways, what do you guys think of this? Is there any advise you can give to help me out and how to start my journey in becoming a car hauler, I know this is what I want to do. I know it will be hard work and very stressful, but it is all I want to do. I have heard it takes a special breed to be a car hauler, and I believe I am one of them.

Another great benefit to Cassens is that they are a part of Teamsters, which I am all for.

Anyways, here is linke to Casses Employment page, http://www.cassens.com/transport/employment.html

Thanks so much, I appreciate it!

You need to learn another form of trucking before hauling cars IMO. You need to learn the dynamics of Ergonomics, Weight, and the rest of trucking. Car Hauling is a whole new level with someone experienced in weight and load shifts.

That's what I figured. I was just wondering because it said that you only needed 1 year of experience or have graduated from an accredited school. Why would you think they advertise saying such things? It says that they have a training program and a "mentor" program as well. So my guess is that they have you work with an experienced car hauler until they believe that you are able to handle the loads by yourself..
    Thanks for you input, btw

It says on your profile you are 18, I got my CDL at 18, because i drove my own stuff (tow trucks) the problem your going to have IF your under 21 is that you will receive a (I) restriction or "except interstate" restriction on your CDL because Federal law prohibits anyone under 21 from driving Interstate commerce. unless your in Texas you cant do OTR work under 21. The positive side is you can do like i did, once you reach 21 and you obtained your CDL since 18 even with the restriction you can say you have 3 years TT operating experience under your belt and you went to a trucking school. Hope your over 21, if not get started now nothing to lose

Yes I am only 18 years old I have just been researching it so I know I will make the right decision when I turn of age to go OTR. I was planning on getting my CDL now but I think I will have a hard time finding a company that will hire a Class A driver that is only 18 years old because of insurance companies. And actually I think I do have something to lose; my time and money. I don't wanna spend thousands of dollars on trucking school to find out I will have to go again because I won't be able to find a job because of my age. Anyways, I am just very interested in car hauling and I wanted to get more info on it now so I can make a more informed decision when my time comes.
    Thanks for the advise man!

Greetings free-bird, i went from trucking school straight to car hauling without going to any other company for experience, if your motivated you can do anything you want, i would say go for it because driving and loading the truck is 2 different things and your load supervisors at the terminals will help you with weight and etc. Please ask me as many question as you want.

Thanks a lot man I appreciate it. I believe I am very motivated and disciplined. I will do whatever it takes to get the job done thats just how I am. I want to be the best of the best and in my opinion car haulers and oversized/specialized load drivers are the most elite. That is what I WILL be. Anyways, how hard was it for you to find a car hauler company that would hire you despite your lack of experience? Did you have a hard time finding them and how long did it take? Cause that's what I really want to do, jump right into car hauling as soon as I graduate truckin' school and get my CDL.
    Thanks again!

Im gonna be honest to you, its not that they are worried about insurance, you'd be surprised some of the blow holes trucking companies hire. its that they cant send you where the loads need to be because of your age. its all about AGE, AGE, and more about your AGE. 18 they wouldn't even return my call when i applied to companies. now that im 22 they blow my email up lol . best thing you can do is get your CDL Now. Car hauling to me isnt trucking, i did it for a year , i still tow cars with a freightliner and a trailer short distance when im not trucking. Hauling cars is like being a taxi for babies. you have to care for them, strap them in, keep them clean while they are with you. And most of all dont get caught abusing them lol. If trucking is in you its in you, if its not you will lose the urge to do it. ive seen many aspire like me but fall short and settle for burger king and call it a life. the more you know now the farther ahead of the game you will be.

Yeah that's the problem man, I just don't wanna blow a shi* load of money and end up having to pay for a refresher course once I turn 21. Lol and that's funny that you said that about babysitting the cars. I know that I will enjoy truckin, my grandfather owned two companies and was also a driver, and so were two of my uncles. And yeah that is why I came one here, to learn as much as possible instead of just jumping into it. I want to make the right decisions and save myself from as much bullish* as I can.
    Thanks again!
