I have small biz start up looking to transport goods from Los Angeles port of entry to a few destinations in Southwest, possibly across country. I'm assuming my cost would be less if I hired independent truckers directly bypassing the forwarding companies. Is that accurate? If yes, how can I email details to request a quote? And do you guys have insurance to protect my load?
Thanks,
Tom
New to your world! Can I hire a driver directly for personal loads?

If you have the $$$$, trucks are easy to find. There are 'LOAD BOARDS" where shippers (you) post on-line what they need to have shipped by a carrier (us).Google "LOAD BOARD FOR TRUCKERS". We get together on the phone, discuss the details, you are faxed a copy of all needed insurance and certificates ( Make sure carrier has CARGO insurance to cover the cost of your merchandise, if it is damamaged, ),we agree on everything, paywork is signed, driver picks up your load, delivers the freight, you pay him. Everyone is happy.
Just be sure to ask for references, check all insurance, communicate at every turn, pay a fair rate. It can be a good deal for both parties.bullhaulerswife and GernB Thank this. -
Thanks very much! I'll give it a try. Any suggestions on a "fair" rate? Do you usually charge by the mile? What about loading or unloading the freight? I guess that's all negotiable. Thanks again.

Register on load board as a shipper, check what's current going rate from Cali to SE, post a load and wait for calls. Then negotiate a price and that's about it. You will probably pay more than other established shippers or pay less if you pay upfront or at delivery

sure can,,make sure he has good insureanc and you want an insurance certificate listing you as a certificate holder and only accept an insurance certificate from his insurance carrier,,also make sure the deductible is not over $1,000 for cargo $500 preferred, Also make sure he has US DOT motor carrier authority to haul for hire, you can look this up at a federal DOT website www.safersys.org
Make sure you pay a fair price too,,
