Hi there, I am a female driver in my second full week of driving with a trainer and have about 65 hours done. My trainer is a dedicated Office Max and home on weekends. Werner tells me today that they will no longer put me in a motel for the weekends, I have to stay at the truckstops as a cost saving measure. Not exactly a secure feeling for a girl....
Good news is because she is a dedicated driver, the driving is stead and the loads preassigned.
can't wait until my hubby and I are on the road together!
My husband is at about his 60th hour with an OTR driver and having bad luck with breakdowns and waiting for loads. His trainer is an owner operator and they have also had to wait in between every new load, which is why with weekends off, I'm still a little ahead of him.
How is everyone else doing in training?

Can't say I'm surprised about the cost savings thing. Lots of companies are trying to reduce costs right now. Since they're telling you that you have to stay at the TS over the weekend here's a few things to consider since you're new to the game that might help out.
Since I don't know, and won't ask what town you're staying the weekend in, find the cleanest, best lit, major chain (except Petro) truck stop close enough for your trainer. Park as close to the entrance or fuel islands as you can and nose toward the lights and doors, and just be generally aware of all your surroundings.
As time goes on, you and your husband will figure out the better and worse of the truck stops. Example: The TA in Jessup MD, I won't even stop to buy fuel. Same holds true for the Pilot on the Southside of Indy. On the other hand, half the time when I stay at the TA in Marianna FL, I forget to lock the door and prefer the back row just because it's quieter... hard to believe but a true statement none-the-less. I can't say the same for the Pilot in Marianna, but that's why I don't stay there too. As a general rule, I've found the newer the truckstop, the better the environment. Not always true, but usually is IMO. Without knowing approximately where you are, it's just difficult to make a better recommendation. Hope it helps. -
Thanks for the advice Milkman, I'll keep it in mind....I have to ask (especially because Werner is so fond of them) why is Petro a no-no?
-
you're absolutely right, thank you for the reminder! I used to be an investment consultant - last 20 years, i know what it's like to be out of work!
-
at least you have a motel! good news is, you are getting paid with benefits, and this like everything else, will only last a little while, right?

Not always the hard and fast rule of "no-no", but generally the worst of the lot as near I can tell.... in terms of the elemental surroundings anyway.
