We picked up a 1994 W900 a couple of years ago. Cummins 525hp red top. The only down side was it had a Super 10 trans. We got it cheap and bought it with the intention of changing out the trans, but we got busy and just ran it. Well today, the super 10 gave up, so it's time for a change.

We are thinking we want to set it up to pull our 55 ton lowboy, which is what we originally bought it for, but never have gotten around to setting it up. We routinely gross 100k-120k with that lowboy. Is a 18 speed the best trans for this setup? That is what our original plan was, but thought I'd throw it out there and see if anybody had experience with another trans that they thought was better.

Yes, that will give you the most flexible set up, and an 18 won't cost that much more than a 13 speed. Plus the 18s are beefier transmissions. You'd probably never have a transmission problem again.

The guys at my shop got the Super 10 pulled out today, only thing that appears to be wrong with it is a worn out shifting fork, and the range gear shows a lot of wear, everything else looks good as new.

I’ve been going over some ratios, and don’t know if a 18 is what I need. Honestly, the super 10 does well enough out on the road, it’s the lower jobsite speed and low gear for getting took off in a bad spot is what I need.

The trans I've got has a 11.06 1st and a 18 has 12.19. I’m not so sure that would be much of a difference in low gear. Looking at a 13, it has 14.29. I’m wondering if I would be better served with a 13, or just fix what I have and run it.

Which 18 are you looking at?

    The A or the B?

What's different about the 18A? We had a few older 18s, about as durable as anything I've ever driven.

After I made the above post, I did some more digging. You are correct, the B has a much lower gear than the A.

I think youd like a B ratio 18918 alot better than the A. The A is hard to find anyway and want as popular as the B ratio set. The overdrive is still the same between the 2, but the B was spread out better.

I guarantee youd like it wayyyy better than the super 10. @m16ty , check this out. NEW Eaton 18 and 13 speeds outright. Not a bad price in my opinion. Came across this ad today and thought you might compare it to prices you've already gotten.

One thing you have to think about also is that an 18 is basically a 9 speed but you can split the gears. If you're in a bad spot starting out with that 10 you lose a lot of momentum when you shift cause the RPMs drop so far. With the 18 you can basically only shift half that gear change and the RPMs don't drop as far and it's easier to get going. I used to pull a hopper loaded to 90k lbs. Leaving the pit there was a stop sign and as soon as I crossed the intersection there was a 5% grade that was about 1/4 mile long. That 18 made it easy to take off up the hill and upshift. I never would've shifted if the through had a 10 in it.
