So the company I work for just got me a new truck, it sure is nice looking, and it's got a hell of a lot more power too... went from a 350cummins to a 500cat. The 8LL transmission seems simple enough to use...and actually doesn't do bad on the highway either...but...
the range selector is on the shift knob, okay...but there's another selector switch on the side of the shift knob, kind of like the one I had in an old 13spd truck...when the truck is depressurized I can flip that selector switch easily...but once air pressure builds up or I'm on the move in the truck, I can't move the #### thing. I can tell air is definitely being run to that switch, but I can't figure out why...I've never driven a truck with an 8LL before...
What does it do, if anything at all? maybe one of y'all can answer that one for me.

That little blue (usually) switch is for deep reduction. If your in an off-road/muddy situation or you just need alot of pulling power you shift into neutral, engage the switch, than shift into the gear of choice (generally Lo-Lo). When done you disengage the switch, shift into neutral than back into the gear you were previously in (deep reduc. LoLo-Neu.-LoLo) than resume normal up-shifting. Or if you can stop just disengage deep reduction and choose whichever gear you desire to start in. I suck at explaining things but that about sums it up.

You covered it nicely. That's what I used to do with them.
However, you can't work a deep reduction switch like a regular splitter or you run the risk of destroying your transmission. You must kick it into neutral first. -
wow, that makes a lot of sense...thanks a lot ... and yes...the selector switch is blue too! A lot of places i go are real muddy/off-road too so that'll work nicely.

Hey RacerX-here is link to Eaton /roadranger. Has all info on 8LL-9LL and all others. Video on shifting. Tech data, etc.

Hey thanks again! That's most helpful...

so what's the take on the 8LL transmission...keeping in mind this is a pit truck and spends a lot of it's time on dirt roads and whatnot...but at the same time covers a lot of highway miles too...
our old truck had an eaton 10speed in it with a spicer gearbox (an additional 4 gears) and that truck, despite being old and rickety, could fly.
we're a little worried that the 8LL isn't going to be able to compare. -
It's a good tranny, but you only have 8 gears to choose from on the road. It will prolly be a little slow on the road and have a little bigger jump between the gears but as long as you are not trying to go 75 mph it should be fine. Personally I don't see a need for the 8LL, 1st gear in my 18spd is slower than LL in the 8LL

Another newbie for 8ll
I was told that you can/have to shift all the other 4 gears when you are in deep reduction.
Whereas the eaton fuller manual on how to shift the tranny says you have to shift from LL to L and then the 8 following gears.
