Sometimes on soft ground its faster to leave the deep reduction in and shift up with the stick. Sometimes their is a slight delay with the button shift when a lot of torque is being applied such as on soft ground when heavy. The truck will come to a stop before the shift is made and you get to start over again. We as drivers can shift faster than the air cylinder on the trans and make the shift. You can go all the way to 4th then split out of deep reduction. Either way is perfectly fine. No damage will accure to the trans.

    Thanks melpromud.
I test drove the truck for the first time today, I had no trouble up shifting without clutch but downshifting was hard and I had the same comments from the friend that drove it before me.
I couldn't get out for gear without using the clutch and had trouble finding the right rpm to get it into lower gear.
I talked with another driver who has been using an international (similar specs) for the last 6 years almost daily and he told me he couldn't downshift most of the time with it.
The truck is bran new, it is an international workstar 7500 with 330 hp int engine, 4.76 rears.
Last time I drove this type of truck (it was a FL80) I can't remember having trouble, may be it is because it is new or I was in a bad day.
Other things about this truck : it doesn't corner at all and it is a rough ride compared to freightshaker.

I'm not sure if it was said already but I leanred on one of these tranny. If the button is blue it's for deep reduction. If it's red it's 13 speed andgrey is for 18 speeds.

The reason your having trouble shifting is most likely not the transmission but the engine. These new electronic engines have terrible throttle controle. My truck is an 07 with an 18 speed and some days I fell like a rookie. I ve been driving 16 years and 1.5 million miles. I know how to shift but this truck has no throttle responce at all. Up shifting is fine but down shifting or any type of gear recovery is tough. Ill tap the fuel to rev up for a down shift and not get a big enough rev. Tap harder, still not enough. Tap again, still not enough. Tap harder again and it over revs. Its very frustraiting. Many of these new trucks shift hard because of the fuel petal to engine electronics suck. I think your having the same problem. Time and practice will help but if the throttle responce is bad enough even that wont help much. Both the International and Cummins told me their is nothing they can do.

    onarock Thanks this.
