Just wanted some opinions on what would be the better route. Buy a brand new truck for $130K or buy a used truck for $30K and put a new engine and drivetrain in it for another $30K? I think the used route is the way to go.

Even after the new engine and drivetrain you are still paying less than half what a new truck would cost and the engine and drivetrain and tires are really all that really matter on a truck. Makes you wonder why new trucks are so expensive. Am I missing something or is this just simple math?

Another route is to buy a newer used truck for around $60K but then you still don't know what you are getting. If you buy the old truck and put the new engine and drivetrain in it at least you know you essentially have a new truck and you know what you are getting, a used truck with a new engine or a used truck with a used engine, seems like a simple choice to me.

How about buying a new truck and putting in a factory rebuilt engine and tranny? That can be done as a glider truck. I just ordered a 2013 Freightliner with a pre-emission factory rebuilt engine. Factory rebuilt Eaton 18 speed. Every thing else brand new including rear axles. Complete with OEM factory warranties on everything. A truck like this can be had for around $100K, give or take depending on what you spec. And you know what you are getting.

If it were my decision it would be re-powering a tractor and saving money, depreciation hits as soon as you sign the papers on a new truck.

I would consult a mechanic that can do the job and go from that point, there are plenty of older tractors in good shape for the job.

No. Ordered my thru Harrison Truck, an Iowa Freightliner dealer. I had more flexibility on spec'ing out the truck than I would have had with Fitzgerald.

So you can order a glider and they'll assemble it at the dealer? I always thought if you bought a glider you have to have a third party put it together?
