Ok, just understand the first year of trucking is the roughest. Not to many companies will give him an opportunity because their insurance don't cover drivers with less than a year or two experience. And it also depends on his driving and criminal record. Once he completes a year, the door of opportunity will burst wide open, and better jobs will come his way. You guys made an excellent decision entering the trucking industry. The first year is rough when you have family and bills to handle.it will get better.. does he have all his endorsements?(hazmat, tankers, doubles)

Oh thank you thank you so much for that glimmer of hope you just gave us :) Ok he has no criminal records, no bad things at all. And no endorsements YET. But if thats what he needs to better succeed here he said he will get them. So, is it wise to just stay put the first year, which is only 7 more months?? Are some companies really better pay as far as being a company driver goes? Or does everyone max out at around .50 cents per mile? I do understand we need to work our way up, and earn our place. It's just been so very hard to make this change I guess I was just searching for some immediate relief lol. Thank you for your time :)

Yes.. He need his endorsements to better his opportunities.. other wise he's gonna be limited. I saw someone suggest earlier about LTL companies (ESTES, CONWAY,SAIA, OLD DOMINION, YRC, FEDEX FREIGHT, UPS FREIGHT) to name a few. I'm sure there are other similar companies in your area. These are great companies to apply for. They pay drivers from 19.00 to 28.00 per hour for city pick up and delivery,(home daily, weekend off) .49 to .60 cents per mile for regional line haul(home daily or every other day because he will have to layover at times, off weekends ) the have great benefits. Most drivers earn between 50k and 80k on average per year. But he's gonna need his endorsements.

What he can do now in the mean time, and I know a few drivers that did this. He can apply right now as a dockworker, make sure he put on the app he's a class a driver. If he works as a dock worker, they will pay him around 16.00 to 20.00 per hour loading and unloading trailers. Now because he already have a class a with experience they will have him drive some times but probably not everyday and they probably will pay him dock worker salaries until he gets a year under his belt. After that year, they will bump his salaries to driver pay.

LTL is not for everyone. Drivers that don't wanna interact with anyone, refuse to get in the trailer and touch freight, and want to hang out at truck stops won't last. Those drivers struggle with LTL unless they do regional line haul.

But drivers that don't mind working, climbing in and out of trailer, handling, multiple stops and interacting, and can handle customer service will do fine in LTL (Less Than truckLoad)

Excellent advice. The money lies within LTL or Private Fleets, hands down. I'm sure a few OTR/Regional outfits are competitive, but the OP's husband will be better off in LTL. The added home time will be a bonus given his wife's medical conditions.

This sounds wonderful! I looked up the one close to us YRC, they seem to offer just what we need!! I will continue to look into more like them. To check out all options. & I will speak to hubby this weekend & tell him to try & start gearing himself toward his other endorsements. I know he LOVES the flatbed, so I guess he can choose someone like TMC (if he really wants to stay flatbed lol) or or an LTL company soon. I know all this information is so valuable, thank you guys so much! you are very kind!! I can't wait to sit & show him all this :) Have a great evening! & Stay safe!

You can even apply for those job's for him online while he's away on the road. Since he likes flat beds I HEAR (dont know for certain Melton truck lines is good, and look at Western express). He can also look into J.B Hunt and Schneider INTERMODAL ONLY. Those companies he can try now as well..I know intermodal pay is decent. But he will be better off at those LTL companies.

Yes, that's a wonderful idea :) I had to look up what intermodal was. lol That sounds interesting. Yes, MANY ppl have mentioned the Melton trucking company, so we will look at that also. So far the most popular places on my thread here are TMC, Melton, Decker, & any LTL. (Yes, I have been actually taking notes as we go on here ;) lol
I would like to know what ppl think about Maverick? (our current co.) It seems a lot of ppl rank tmc & mav in the same group? and why do some here call them bottom feeders? lol just wondering :) Maverick seems really nice, & many company drivers seem happy, but it takes a while to move up the pay scale. They offer the older trucks to buy & you can be IC at one year, and we speak to many drivers who are paying off the truck very soon, & the wives tell me they are making around 2000.00 a week. (but bad weeks happen too) Now there is a guy I mentioned earlier, who tells me he clears that much at USA too, but it seems for like 80% of ppl things do not go so well... I just find it interesting that some can do that lease deal just fine & others can not. It seems to be if the company supports you enough you can do better? but who knows. lol Still way over our head as of now. ok well, have a great night. ttys thanks again :)
