If you live in the East and only making .38/mi with no insurance your hubby is being raped.
There are private fleets to haul for that will pay by the hour with benefits.
Biggest mistake is to be pig-headed about doing flatbed only. And don't do work that competes with the low-ball OTR companies. I made $900 - $1,200 every week before taxes when I lived in the East back around 1990. That's 25 years ago!
I sure wouldn't want to feed all those mouths doing trucking.
Thank Obama for closing the coal companies. Maybe pitch a tent at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave and start begging.
new trucking family & we are STARVING! It has to be better than this!??

OK I didn't read much of a reply, but I am going to make a suggestion,
As stupid as this sounds, I understand that there are no shortages of truck drivers but shortages of heavy equipment operators in the mid-west. IF he has more experience in using heavy equipment, I would look into it. My father who was an operator and retired as one( he held many jobs but this was the one he stuck to) had one of his freinds try to get him back on a machine because he can't find operators. SO here is my suggestion - contact the IOE local in your area and see if there is any paid training possibilities for him. IF none there, contact the ones in other states. -

From what it looks like , her hubby's problem is the 1400-2400 miles per week. Over a 7 day average that's only 200-300 miles a day. $60-$100 day revenue before taxes won't cut it.

lol.

My husband is talented on heavy equipment, over 11 years of working it, but there is no big need here for them now with Coal dying. We will make this truck thing work, just hard being a noob
lol

Lisa, what you just described is the realities of trucking. I just sat for 3 days and ran over five hundred miles empty to be told my load got pushed back a full week cause a machine went down. And I own my truck and trailer. so not only did I not make any money from Tuesday to today, I spent a lot of money on fuel plus wear and tear. The best load I could find after that fiasco, won't load till Monday and is five hundred miles back the way I came from. That's basically a full week of no load, plus a thousand miles of fuel burnt up out of pocket. In other words, I just threw five hundred dollars out the window.#### happens.
I don't know who he is employed by, but it's sounds like a regional operation. If you are working for a regional company, you will never average more than 2k, to 2400 miles a week. And with not even six months experience, your chances of finding the rare good paying local job is about one in zero.
With his limited experience in today's depressed market, 800 gross is realistically all you can expect to average.
I hate to sound so negative, but I believe the cold truth is much better than a warm friendly wishful thinking lie.halfburn Thanks this. -
I also wonder about being in WV. I don't see a lot of freight coming in and out of there. Chicago is a freight HUB. -
lol, Thank you!!! & I love the cold truth! It helps one make better decisionsYes, we need to hand tight until we have 1-2 years on the road, then maybe things will get better. thanks for your reply! We are Learning more everyday.
