Hello,
I could use some help on what the next step I take should be. I currently work a full-time job in a factory and I am looking to find something else. I applied to a company that distributes beer but did not get the position. However they told me if I had a CDL I would have a job.
So I studied and passed the general knowledge exam to get my learners permit. I did not get the airbrake endorsements but I am confident I can pass that test if needed. So now I have my learner's permit. But no truck to learn on and I don't know anybody that can teach me. There is a school called Fox Valley Tech that has a four-week class B program I could take. I believe the course is around $2,500. it is located in our from my house. However in order to go to school I would have to quit my job which I cannot afford to do. At this point I cannot find a company that would be willing to hire me on and teach me as I work for them to get my class B.
I guess my question is is there any other school or something else I am not thinking of that could help me get a little drivetime behind a straight truck so I could get experience to pass my class B CDL dmv test? Something I could do on the weekends so I would not have to quit my job. Or is there any other possibility I am not thinking about that might work for me?
Thank you for your help and any suggestions. They are very much appreciated. Jared

A few food service companies hire permit holders then you work as a drivers helper and he trains you for the cdl.
Sygma Network
Sysco
Reinhart Foodservice
U.S. Foods
Gordon Food Service
McLane Company
This might not be on their websites, but they do hire cdl permit holders. A few drivers have posted about being hired for these jobs.jaywarren226 Thanks this. -
Might as well go for your class A while you're at it...

I looked into the grant and that might work. My obstacle is I have to work many Saturdays as well with mandatory overtime. There are night classes but Fox Valley is a 1hr 20min drive one way and I would never make it there in time after my shift.
I was hoping there might be places out there where you could drive on one or two Saturdays and get enough experience to take the test with. I will look for a weekend school.Last edited: May 17, 2016

Take your time and save some money.
In the mean time, study enough to pass the air brake test so you can get a class A. Not that hard.
You seem too much in a rush, and that isn't good.
Save enough so that you can get the training without having to worry about working that job. -
Jay - there is a co called Pro CDL (in WI) that will give you training by the hour. I assume they are still in business, not sure if it counts as getting the accredited class and mandatory hours though.
second - get your airbrake whether you need it right now or not. most places won't be able to train you in a truck if you don't have air brake.
last there is a school in Sun Prairie that has a weekend class schedule. I think it was 5 weekends. if your boss gives you crap about it, tell him you need the weekends off to help better yourself and make yourself more valuable to them
otherwise you can go to Roehl for the Get paid to get your CDL program and they pay you while you go to their school
Millis will send you through their school for 500 down and if you stay 2 years you don't have to pay for the school.jaywarren226 Thanks this. -
Thank you for the info on Sun Prairie I will look it up. And thank all of you for the advice and tips!
