Be prepared to be hungry if you turn down very many loads.

Like someone else said, plan ahead and plan well. Get a map of the city as you get closer and go over your route, then have a back up route just in case.

I have been up there. DON'T LIKE IT! I would not refuse a load. Just one going into the NYC. I really do not like New England that much but I would deliver there. Love Maine. I would not use SWIFT as a travel agency because I have already been to all of the lower 48. I have spent the last 20+ years married to an OTR and the last 6.5 months 24/7 with him on the road. And during that 20+ year period I had:biggrin_25525: gone out with him several times.

Your ID says you are from Katy--I've had as many problems making drops in Houston as any other big city! Besides theres is more room in the point than in the market in Houston! It's really no biggie--besides if you are new--IMHO you are better off taking whatever you can get that pays--and being known as a reliable driver--I think that can pay off much more in the long run.
    Just my $.02:biggrin_25519:

Yes you have a point there. But I am still not that confident yet in my abilities. And as a soon to be New driver I do not think I will be ready to tackle the BIG APPLE yet. My hubby did not like it at all and he was a veteran driver. And he said if you can avoid it you avoid going in there. The people there do not know how to act around big trucks. They are a bunch of crazy people behind the wheel. Plus it is SO CONGESTED and most of the streets are just not made for a big truck. So if I can avoid it I will. I can still be a dependable driver and do a great job for the company that I drive for just not in NYC.:biggrin_25520:

My first solo run (with Swift) was to Columbia, MD (deliver) and then Sparrow's Point (pick up). It wasn't that bad to be honest. That was the only time I was that far out on the east coast, except for the time I went to Vermont and New Hampshire (different company).

So, you want to drive trucks, but only on the easy roads. Come on now, People. If you are a truck driver, you go where the freight goes, you haul whatever dispatch says to haul, and you don't cry about it. You don't really want to tell your grandkids you were a truck driving fool, but, were afraid to go to NYC, with all those big, bad scary NYC drivers, do you ?

I guess living in jersey has it's good points. Everyone is afraid to drive around me and im not afraid of anything because it's what I see every day. From what i've heard on here there are cities that are even worse.

Just take your time and keep in mind no one is going to be nice and let you in around here. You have to take what you want. Once you figure that out driving around here is easy.

To Allow Me, I will go where the freight is but not to NYC just yet. If you read my post I stated that!:biggrin_25513:No need to be a B head about it.

To rizob, Thanks for your input and not judging me. In time I am confident that I will be fine and be able to maneuver the truck where ever they send me. But in good conscience right now and not that confident yet. I am saying I will feel a lot better about going in there with some time and experience just not right out of school and off of the trainers truck.:biggrin_25525:

There are worse places to deliver than New York City.
