Hello everyone. I am seriously evaluating changing careers at this late point at a vibrant 59 years of age. I'll be going to Commercial Driver Training school here on Long Island for a CDL-A license. I'm doing a monumental amount of research leaving no question unanswered. I need to be sure this is the right move. I was in advertising for 37 years doing graphic arts production, a very highly-pressured business which has changed in many ways and leaving me behind. I wish all Good Luck and welcome any advice experienced truckers wish to offer.

Hey Trekker, i went to Commercial driver Training back when i lived in N.Y. I would like to tell you how good they were however that was back in 1976 L.O.L
Back then they were in Farmingdale. I can say this, they had a great program back then. good luck in school.

That's good to hear. They're P.T.D.I. certified, only 3 schools in N.Y.S. are and they appear to be competent. I already visited a couple of times. I'm sure the CDL-A training was a lot less expensive back then. For the full-blown 8 week course it's going to run me $5900. I can finance half of that. They're in West Babylon now off of the S.S.P. on Wellwood Ave.

Yea, it was quite abit cheaper back then. My parents paid for me to go, probably to get me out of their house for good Lol. I went only on saturdays so it took awhile to complete the program however they were very thorough. I do remember for about 4 hours the first day, all we did was straight backing. May seem boring but it paid off big time! After school, backing anywhere was never an issue. I do remember that the road test given by the DMV was in Maspeth. The Hi-way portion was driving on the BQE onto the LIE for a couple of exits then back to Maspeth. Im sure its all different today.

I recently finished my 4 week 160 hour course @$4000.
Wound up with 25 hours on the road. 35 in the yard, 40 classroom and the rest watching and waiting for my turn.

I went with Roehl. There school, which gets great reviews, and I can concurr, was one of the least expensive options I found. I paid nothing out of pocket, and as long as you work for them, you do not have to pay it back in cash, but by miles after120000 miles, which you should get in a years time, you have paid them back for the schooling. Its a great program.
