I'm new to this forum and to trucking in general, so I apologize ahead of time. I was hoping some of the veteran drivers on here could help steer me in the right direction with some good old fashioned career advice. I am brand new out of truck school and just got my class A cdl about 2 weeks ago. Im waiting to hear back from TSA regarding background check and will be testing for my HazMat and Tanker endorsements soon after.
Everywhere I look they want 1 to 2 years exp which I dont have yet. Ideally, in the future, I would like to locally transport fuel but I know that no ones going to hire me for that at this time. I'm moving next week to San Jose and have been diligently looking for work. My questions are: Is going OTR my best option in getting experience or is their another type of driving I should be looking at? I have a clean driving record and work history, Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Trimac Transportation sometimes hires new cdl grads. It depends on the terminal and if they need drivers. Some recent posts from new cdl grads that were hired by Trimac in various parts of the USA. It's hazmat/tanker and drivers in their Elite Fleet make around $100K. New cdl grads probably around $60K the first year. Find a terminal in your area and just walk in and ask for an application and interview. Might be your lucky day.

Here's some companies that hire new cdl grads and can get that 12 months experience you need for those local tanker jobs.
    Northern Refrigerated Transportation
    Watkins-Shepard
    KKW Trucking
    Dynamic Transit
    Freymiller
    National Carriers
    Jim Palmer Trucking
Abilene Motor Express - just started hiring West Coast/Pacific Northwest drivers.
Magnum Ltd. - just started West Coast/Pacific Northwest runs.

All the above hire new cdl grads. with no experience, even if the website has different.

San Jose has a lot of options.

It depends on what you want to do and how much you need to make.

Stay FAR away from SWIFT, KNIGHT, MAY, ENGLAND, WERNER and JB HUNT. ((JB hunt can be a good deal, but not for rookies).

System Transport and TWT (Same company) hires out of there, And there's a LOT of local companies out of that general area looking for local drivers.
San Jose, watch OUT for Ag companies wanting you to haul over-weight ag products with no permits. They will screw you HARD.
