I wasn't exactly sure where to post this, but I'm experienced and I have some advice.
I think, if the wannBees and newbies are lookin' for good advice, they'll be able to handle the photo of a BIG yellow sign located in Robbinsville, in the beautiful state of North Carolina. In bold black font ---
TRUCK ADVISORY
--------------------
UP TO 12% GRADE
15-20 MPH CURVES
FOR UP TP 46 MILES AHEAD
-------------------
BEGINS 11 MILES AHEAD
That's what is said and should only be read one way.
TURN 'ER AROUND
Don't believe me?
Good for you!
So I invite y'all to see for yourselves ---
I used Y-Hoo Search -- using "Tail of Dragon Truck Photos." And clicked on the first site.
I suggest y'all have your Road Atlas open to the proper page and follow along in the book. I also suggest you high-lite that stretch of highway in bright red --- or just X-it out all together.
One mistake would be to see that sign.
The second mistake is drivin' a Big truck past it and into/onto, it -- "it" being The Dragon's Tail. It's named that for a reason -- a good reason.
You see, that stretch of highway is also VERY popular with the motorcycle, sports car, and tourist crowd, who sometimes push the limit.
The high-performance folks want to "tame The Dragon."
Some of the tourists are driving motor
homes and pullin' trailers -- which they do maybe two weeks a year on vacation. Real experienced (in forgetting about the trailer they're pullin').
That's bad enough without addin' a Big truck into the mix.
I'm not sure there's a third chance option.
Some of those photos are AfterShocking though. But, I think, something that every GOOD Wannbee -- including seasoned drivers might wanna remember.
And if y'all forget --- remember to bring a camera.
And if y'all have driven the drive --- here's YOUR sign.:smt075

There is a thread on this site about that road, including accident pictures.
-
can you post site to those pictures or pictures themselves?
we have oregon trail in hood river,or where we have annual rally races for all wheel drive subarus...but cars do drive through there during regular season, never seen a semi there if i did i'd be like
-
Yeah, ........ but where?

Now there's two.
Or, call mine a reminder.
PLENTY of photos at the site I visited.
As I recall, that site is a group of motorcyclists who enjoy The Dragon's Tail. Sure can't blame them for that.
And, as I recall, bikers in general would prefer that no Big trucks use that road, at all.
I don't blame them for that either.
I viewed those photos a few years ago, and think every Big truck truck driver should, at least, be aware of that highway. I can't imagine a driver would attempt it if they knew whatcher gettin' into.
I X-'d it out in my Atlas'.
ALL of 'em.
I hear there WERE certain Big truck truckin' companies that considered The Dragon's Tail "most direct route" -- and sent their drivers that way, or be out of route.
Careful trip planning would spot the error in that thinkin' -- or lack thereof.
Can y'all imagine a rookie with about 6 months experience OTR on mostly Interstates -- straight Interstates, lookin' out the windshield and seein' the Devil lookin' back at 'em.
And, to whomever posted it first?
Thanx!
If I had known --- I'da bumped it.
My bad.

There ya go -- takes y'all right to it!
Thanx Trucking_O_T !!
It may be the round-about way to git 'er done, but that's the subject anyway.
I think.
I wonder if the NewBee's section could handle viewing those photos though.
IMO --- those photos SHOULD be a MUST view for ANY driver, Big or 4-wheeled.

I've seen many pictures of that road before and for the life of me I can't understand why someone in a truck would go that way. The 12% is the warning to me to turn around and select a different route. The slow curves will take alot of time out so maybe another road would be faster.
Sometimes drivers hear there's a short cut and go for it no matter what's up ahead. We had a new driver out west that didn't know how to get to one station for delivery. So she goes in and asked the supervisor and he tells her the way to go. But while she's loading another driver tells her there's a short cut but it's a very steep hill and at the top there's a stop sign. So she goes for it. She gets up the hill but burns the clutch out trying to get the truck moving from the stop sign. A tow truck is called to get the truck. Once the tow truck gets hook up he releases the brakes off the truck it breaks away from the tow truck and runs down the hill flips over and the load ends up in the harbor of San Pedro. That was 8900 gallons of gasoline in the harbor. Maybe if she got another job driving she'd now know what the truck can do.
To me trip planning was just as important as driving safely. -
Cannot believe anyone with a brain in their head would drive a truck on that road. In my spare time I'm a Dragon junkie!!! Been on it more times over the years than I can count but only on two wheels. I now run it only during the week as on one weekend around '94 I came around a bend , lefthander, in my lane only to be looking at the front end of two Honda Civic's, side by side, rounding the bend headed for me, more in my lane than theirs. I believe the guy on the inside was "leaning" on the fellow on the outside. I had to adjust my line to the inside of the turn into the oncomming lane to keep from being a squashed like a bug! Luckly they went by on my right and the hillside wasn't up against the road for that turn (very uncommon for that road).
I would not recommend that approach to anyone but it saved my bacon, my riding buddy who was about 15-20 seconds behind me caught the tail end of it and we both went looking for clean shorts!
Sorry to post here with you season drivers and I'm just looking into this but when I saw a post about the Dragon you got my heart pumping.
I travel from Western PA just to ride that part of the world every spring and have used up more tires in that area than I can count.
Driving a large truck on those road never crossed my mind and I cannot say I've ever seen anything larger than a dump truck on it and that guy had his hands full and his brakes smokin...
Look up Cross Roads of Time, it deals with a motorcycle site, there you will find the Tree of Shame, has some rather expensive bits of motorcycl parts hung on it, a visual warning to those who push too hard but each year more parts get attached. Gods way of thinning the heard...
Again thanks... -
I have to look at my map but I believe I have been on that road with a truck.
There is another like it out in NM too.
And one just as bad IN TN just north of Chatanooga but not near as long -
