Hi, this my first time ever on this website, i just found it. I'm curious as to whether anyone has heard of a company called driver solutions, (i hope i can use their name). I am seriously considering using them as a means to get my cdl, and a job. I know that i will have to be otr for at least a year to get the experience, which im ok with. But does anyone know if it is a good school, or gone thru them. I appreciate any advice i can get.

 

Its not a school. I like to think of it as more of a temp service.
They are just looking for willing bodies.
They will arrange a school for you to go to and set you up with a contract at a company to start at.

I would say no.
I applied, was told my record wasnt good enough for pam. I had a suspension from a unpaid ticket a couple years ago and they have like a sort of grace period regarding suspensions.
Then for the other company, USA truck, I had a gap in my employment, I was a professional Athlete for 2 years. After I got everything sorted out, my recruiter david locke told me he sent my paper work to some other department and he was waiting for an offer.
Every week I would call back and he would quickly say the same thing, almost like it was a standard brush off line.
I called USA direct and they told me they had company provided training but I would need a Georgia or Texas address and they would get me started with school and a job. Basically avoid the driver solutions head hunters and do the research and leg work yourself and you will be better in the long run.

Im going to Watkins and Shepard on the 20th and financing the school on my own.
I will be making more per mile and wont have to bother with a contract.
I would rather have a company know Im there because I want to be and not due to a contract.

Could someone clarify as to what exactly a "CDL Learner's Permit" is and how I go about getting one? I've seen on numerous sites before you can even take training (to get an actual CDL) you have to have a CDL Learner's Permit.

Would I just study up on things about Trucks, then contact my DMV and have to take some test, or...? Also, any online study guides or things of that nature?

 

Its like the learner's permit you got to drive a car, but for a T/T and you get one at the DMV. Your State's DMV should have a book for you to study as well.As far as the T/S books I have both and I've noticed that one T/S might be in but not the other. Also take into account the book was current when it was printed not when it was sold. I have come across a few T/S's that were closed down that were listed as open.

 

Anyone know, right off-hand, which of the **larger** trucking companies will allow pets (yes, plural: **pets**). I have two "puppies' (one 75 lbs, one 55 lbs). I know that OTR driving is preferrable, at least for the first year, and I would certainly like to do that, but I need to bring my second set of kids with me.

Go to your local DMV and get the manual, or check your States Internet sites. I downloaded mine for Texas and studied for about 1 week. Went there Friday and passed all the tests with no problem. Now I have my class A permit and do my first driving this Saturday at a local training facility. There are some sites that have free practice tests available. Good Luck!!!!

 

All this information is really helpfull. As a member of the Armed Forces, its much like going to Afganistan, "except for the gun fire of course"...lol. Pack only what you need, prepare for the worst and keep doing your job. When the dust settles, you know you did what you suppose to do, and everyone is happy at the end of the day. I can't wait to get out on the road.
