    Hi all....
here i am a newbie from vegas, just got my cdl with a tanker, dbl and triple endorsement and working on getting my haz mat endorsement in a few days... even with all that, i have no experience and can't find a job to save my life right now...

I am aware that i will have to be away from the family for at least 3-6 months to gain the experience, but i was hoping to get some guidance from anyone on what company i could try, without getting hired by one of those nightmare contract jobs. If anyone knows of any local jobs that i might not have to be gone from the family i would just about name my next kid after you...

really any guidance or help would be greatly appreciated... thank you!

you are more than likley gonna have to go over the road for a atleast 6 months unless you get really lucky but most local companys want you to learn with a large carrier with deep pockets, befor they will take a change on you.. good luck and don't get discuraged

I'm assuming you attended a CDL school to obtain your CDL and endorsements, if not your SOL and you will need to attend a school. If you did attend a CDL school, there are many companies that will train you with out the "nightmare contract jobs" USA, Swift, FFE, Werner, Crete Carrier to name a few. You will spend a few weeks of training OTR with a trainer and the will actually pay you to train. I think the magic number these days is atleast a 150 hr CDL school with passing grades and a Class A in hand

thanks nwmaxi... Appreciate your wisdom. This is my new career, so i will have to stick it out... just left a lifetime of construction... that industry is dead here and nearby.. had been traveling as far as montana for construction jobs.. but even those are dead.. so this was the fastest, most interesting way for me to earn a living and support my family. Hopefully i can find a job with my CDL soon, thank goodness i have a very supportive wife...

yes Jonny1, i did graduate from a CDL school. did my 150 hours and passed the school with a 98%... had a great trainer, Sarge from A.G.S. I appreciate your advice.

Swift has a terminal in Reno/Sparks with alot of freight that runs from pheonix to sparks for shuttle so getting home there in vegas won't be a problem and clearwater paper has a warehouse there that they also haul for, so they might be worth looking into for where you live... just a thought i drove for them as an owner op for just over 3 years and they were good to me...

keep us posted on what you decide to do

thanks nwmaxi, lil may and allow me... i appreciate the support...
i applied to cox and andrus online... hopefully i will get a call...
hey nwmaxi... so why does swift get such a bad rap?? i have read horror stories on here about them.... i am getting pretty desperate though, so i might end up having to call them anyway... at least maybe the one in reno/sparks is a good swift company... i appreciate the info..

sooooo here is another one... what can i expect to be earning?? i just don't understand the pay... per mile, per drop, accident bonus etc etc.. 14 days on 1.5 days home... just don't understand the lingo and would appreciate a run down... what is decent pay for a newbie?? what should i say no too??

    thanks everyone!

Paid per miles run. Paid per drop or pick-up, after the first one. Bonus for extra miles run over 10,000 per month/MPG over 6 mpg/passing a DOT inspection/having no accidents-incidents/never late for delivery bonus. These are just some bonus's that some companies may pay. I would say .30 a mile for a newbie is about par, maybe more, maybe less. So, gross would be $900 a week/$3856 a month, if you ran 3000 mi a week.

Go to swift in sparks for 6 months to get your experience and then move on to pulling tanker. At swift you should get home every 4 to 6 weeks.
