I just graduated from school and took my test this past Wensday. Now the fun part finding a job in this messed up economy. I just got back from working overseas as a DOD contractor so i'm not stressing finically but I do need to get back to work within a reasonable ammount of time. I'm a heavy equipment operator and basically got my CDL to make me a more marketable operator but I'm thinking of doing OTR for awhile to pay my dues and get my expirence for a fall back career. Here are my questions

    1. Are there any companies out there that count military operations of a tractor trailer as expirence? (I have roughly a year total of drive time on a 916 with a lowboy trailer. As well as 5 ton dumps and cargo.)

    2. I know there being picky here latley I had a DUI back in Oct 01 and a reckless op back in Jun 02. ( on that deal was charged with DUI even with being well below the legal limit...long story short got wreckless op out of the deal ) I was young wild and stupid like most guys in there early 20's but are there any companies out there that are realistic about things? I understand its the insurance companies primarly making it difficult. I mean the Gov't trusted me enough to give me a security clearance and when i was a DOD contractor had no issues getting my passport. How much of a issue would it be being 8 years old?

    3. Recieved a email from Prime filled out the resume called the recruiter left a message. Any thoughts on them and if my DUI thing would be a issue. I've read both negative and positive things on other forums in here. any more thoughts

    4. Any and all suggestions appreciated.

Wreckless driving isn't an issue. It's 7 years old so it is off your 3 year MVR.... Some companies look at a 5 year MVR, but it is still off your record.

The DUI maybe be an issue. I've seen companies not hire people with a DUI newer then 10 years old.

REDD pretty much summed it up.. some companies are 5, some are 7, some are 10, others are no DUI's ever.. you'll have to do some research and find out which companies accept what, call them and see where you stand. The easiest way is to call the company. With the economy the way it is, their hiring standards are changing daily.

Reckless driving is usually a plea bargain. Rarely does a cop pull someone over for reckless driving. So, having a reckless AND a DUI is bad news. But, it's the time line involved and depends on the insurance carrier. Kinda funny how we have this devil may care attitude in our early 20's, then realize in our mid 20's that we need to grow up if we are to be anything in life.

I know a guy who had 2 reckless drivings on his MVR from when he was 18-19. CR England hired him when he was 21. They didn't seem to care, like they understood that he was young and plus it was in a car not a big truck. This was just a few years ago.

I'll address the military experience. Most companies will not consider military as OTR exerience especially the 5 ton. Mine was counted only because I had a rare duty assignment as was OTR with a Ryder Tractor and a 60 ton lowboy Navy trailer. Plus I was driving all across the states hauling heavy equipment. I had my logs to show them and they took it as OTR experience. But I also had tons of experience driving all over the bases and the ranges and they did not consider that OTR experience. Nor did they take the experience I had over in Spain which I thought they should because of the roads! So it depends on what you're driving and where you're doing it. Don't mention military numbers for the truck, just list it as semi or truck and trailer driving. But remember alot of companies like the fact that you have a military background so you can capitalize on that.
