If you can get an LTL company to hire you, that's what I recommend first. Then tanker, then flatbed, then van. Van is what everyone does, so it pays the least.
But a good LTL company can pay you well and get you to the house pretty often. It's fast-paced, with none of the feast or famine the poster above spoke of. That's what I've done for 11 years now, and...well, it's been mostly good with some snafus due to the companies I've chosen.
If you want a recommendation...let's say Dayton, OD, Estes, ABF, FedEx Freight...stay away from YRC if possible.
If you live in a major city and UPS hires feeder drivers off the street, that's a literal no-brainer. Get the necessary experience and apply until they take you.
