    hello everyone

ive been reading this board for about a month now. i've been interested in driving trucks awhile and i was definitely going for company paid training just because i didn't want to immediately pay out of pocket but the company contracts were not really wooing me either. anyway i finally just paid for it myself. tomorrow i start my second week of school. which is basically learning the 6 manuevers and the final week is on the road training. i go to georgia driving academy by the way. im 21. female. decent driving records. i've already got prehires for usatrucks, ffe, and crst. us xpress is my top choice but for all the wrong reasons. it's just because i've never driving a manual and they have all auto-shifts but they seem to have some terrible reviews. anyway i think i'm just nervous and hoping that i get the concept of how to drive a manual over the next 2 weeks. the good thing is right now we take our cdl road test in automatics tho. but that's about to change soon. maybe in 3 weeks. but any info anyone wants to add would be helpful. im interested in roehl as well. im really interested in the over the road buy maybe not all 48 states. i don't have kids or a family to get home with often. but i need to get used to being on the road all the time. so im thinking southeast regional. i actually think werner #### near pays my schools light bills or something. because we pratice on a werner truck. and everything around the place says "werner". they send a lot of students there i know. one of the students who graduated from the school i attend got on a werner dedicated with homedepot and ran m-f. does anyone have any ideas how many miles this could be a week? anyway.. hello and nice to join the boards finally. i have a million and five questions but i'll hold majority of them right now.

    sbranch822,

Hello and welcome. I'm only out in front of you as a CDL school grad by a few weeks but may have some answers as the information I have is somewhat relevant and recent.

We had one female in our class at my CDL school in Virginia. Her situation sounded a lot like yours in that she had no real commitments at home and was eager to get out on the road. She was studious in her questioning of companies and eventually went with KLLM where she is currently in training. Only a couple of weeks in but she really likes her trainer whom she says goes out of his way to make her comfortable and she seems to be learning a lot.

She had thought about U.S. Xpress as well, because of the automatic trucks, but in the end she wasn't comfortable with their training (only 3 weeks for a newbie driver doesn't sound like much) and didn't want to start off on automatic trucks once she give in some thought (she had never driven a manual transmission and didnt want to forget what she had learned in cdl school).

She is active on facebook while she's out on the road, and if you'd like to talk to her via that medium I can provide her information to you (after I check to see if she's ok with it). Similar situations and with her being out front of you by a few weeks it may offer some insight. I can't PM here due to post count, but understand that you can PM a moderator to or email me directly at: that_vegetarian_guy@yahoo.com and I'll give you her information if you're interested.

Werner was one of the companies I had looked at when I was close to finishing school, particularly their dedicated accounts. In my region, all I was offered was a Dollar General account, which broke down something like:

    0.26/mile
    $40 for every trailer unload
$16 per stop at each Dollar General store during the unload.

The recruiter claimed that I would average 1500-1600 miles per week, home every six days but not likely on the weekend since DG likes to receive on weekends. In the end they claimed the average DG account paid an average of $850~/week when driving and unloading was done.

No idea how that compares to the home depot account, but the recruiter also claimed to have regional accounts that ran the same basic routine as the dedicated accounts but without requiring a driver unload - something to think about if you decide on Werner.

My CDL school pushed a bit for Werner, saying that they weren't that bad of a company to work for if you didn't take the company paid schooling route. In the end, I passed on Werner in large part because of the reviews of the company found here at truckers report. Until last Thursday I had intended to go to McElroy (flat bed company) but fell into a local LTL job (that I start Wednesday) instead.

There tends to be a thought that new drivers have to pay dues and work for some of the bottom feeders (Swift, Werner, Schneider, etc) and maybe that's true. I'd still look into some LTL companies (Con-way, FedEx, UPS, etc). Some of the applications say they require a year or two experience, but fill em out anyway (all they can say is no) unless you really want to see the lower 48.

wow! THANKS for all the info. im definitely interested in her info if she says ok. facebook is definitely my life anyway..

i am definitely the only female in my class but i don't mind it at all. i fit in well. except when it came to reading aloud. lol. i always had to read to everyone like the entire book.
i have no idea how many post i have to make in order to receive pms. but eventually i will get there so i'll email you.

um unloading is definitely not a interest area of mine. neither is flatbedding.

pam has automatics as well but you have to be 22. and i want be until the end of august. and i need incpme like 3 months ago.

for the record to whom it may concern, no im just getting into the industry for the money. i dropped my college life in 08. to pursue trucking. but felt discouraged for many reasons. but when the opportunity has arisen so im back on it and have definitely started to pursue.

i've been reading other threads about automatics. i feel like using automatics will definitely make the number of applicants they have hirer because the job appears easier. so student grads like myself will choose those companies first because it "appears" there are smaller number of mistakes. but it just means they can get paid less and trained quicker. but im not really interested in not being valuable because i only know how to really drive an automatic. so i really plan to apply myself in figuring out this 10/13 speed trucks.

that is definitely a thought i've been seeing as well about the bigger companies. i interested in doing the traveling. my game plan is do otr for about a year or 2. just to get the experience to have more doors open for me. and then try something more local and buy a home and things of that nature. most importantly is paying what i currently owe now and saving.
