I have some debt that I would love to hack away at during the summer. I'm a college student so I'd have about three months to work full-time. I don't have a CDL or any truck experience and summer is going to be here in about three months. Do you guys think it would be a good idea if I were to get it and work for the summer? How much does driver training cost? If I work hard, how much money do you guys think I could raise? Thanks!

Drive an ice cream truck;no cdl needed and good money I hear. CDL A cost my son 2,500 to get and you have to be over 21.

I don't think you have enough time to go to school and then get a job. However, if you have a job already lined up then there's a chance you could get your CDL on your own and go to work. You just have to know that you will be doing the work that the regular drivers do not want. So if you do not have any places to search then you need to aware that there's more than a few drivers here that have had hard times finding work right out of school.

If you're searching then go where the work is. For example if you live in an area where they are growing crops, are they coming to market when you want to work? I don't think UPS and companies like them pick up all that much in the summer but you could look there too. But, there're extra work is around Christmas. You might want to work the docks too. There you can get into the door and then maybe next summer be a casual driver. Whatever you do you've got to do it now. Good luck.

I posted a thread a few days ago about seasonal / part time work. I teach High school and I'm looking 4 driver job during summer and other off times like Christmas. I have a ton of debt and my wife hasn't worked in over a yr. I have been mowing grass during summer, and if I can make more money driving I would sell my $7000 mower and hit the road. Lotta hard work in my future with my pitiful wife(depression, fibromyalgia, recovering from pain killer addiction, brain fried)..I have 2 kids--12 and 14. Any advice appreciated. I live near Nashville, TN, and I do have class A CDL. My post is at the bottom...called "part-time / seasonal job". Thanks, Scott.

Keep your mower, there's money to be made in landscaping and you get to set your own schedule. You can't leave your kids with your wife to go OVR if her brain is fried. If your're not already, join us at The Landscapers forum, you will learn how to expand your profit margins and get more business.Just use the search button before you start asking questions, every day you get newbies coming on and starting threads asking the same questions that have been asked and answered thousands of times before;it gets tiring ,just like the newbies here. It's an invaluable forum for landscapers just like this one is for truckers.

Keep yer mower, move down south and you can mow my grass as often as you like. I'm sitting here listening to mowers going all around me an I had to do ours last night. Dam stuff grows like mad right into November an in the summer you gotta mow the stuff 2 or 3 times a week. I hate mowing grass.

:yes2557:Thanks 4 the advice. I really don't want 2 give up mowing, but need 2 make more money. I still wonder if there are part time driving jobs for weekends, Christmas, etc...then I could keep mowing AND truck drive. I worked with a guy once(mon-fri 40 hrs/wk--1st shift) who drove weekends for Dollar General. Of course he had many years exp. driving a milk truck in KY.(I only have 5 months exp.) That would really be awesome for me. I have a lot of time during Nov.-Mar where I could b making $$.

Minimum age for CDL is 18. 21 is for interstate hauling. 18 can do intrastate hauling.
