Hi,
What company would be a good starting point for an inexprienced dedicated, regional, or OTR tractor/trailer driver? Schneider, JB Hunt, Werner, Central Refrigerated, other? The insurance restrictions for 1 to 2 years recent experience is understood, but frustrating. I realize a very small company may be an option to bypass the insurance regulations, but tough to find. $ is not really important right now - just looking for a good company to get experience.
My profile:
- 56 years old
- farm raised - been driving trucks, tractors & other equipment since a youth
- have experience with soft drink delivery sized tractor/trailers, although 25 years ago (pre-cdl - did not grandfather in)
- have straight truck experience in 3 state area - food-service delivery
- acquired my A CDL 2 years ago after graduating from a truck driving school - finished # top of a class of 20 ( day 2, the instructors wondered why I was in the school, felt I didn't need it - my old skills refreshed very quickly) - have not used the CDL since acquiring it
- perfectly clean driving record - never have had an accident or violation - no dui's or felonies
- located in the corner of the Ohio, Indiana, Michigan tri-state area.
Thanks!
Newbie needs advice: Who to go with for experience?

Satch, you're in the same boat I am in. Got my CDL from driving school, (Had eleven years previous T/T driving experience) and I did not put it to use for three years. They pretty much all say, "You need to go back to driving school and start all over.)

That is a very vague question that I have noticed is asked ALOT on this forum. I personally don't think anybody can rightly answer that for you. I know this really doesn't help you, but I think only YOU can answer that question through exhaustive research narrowing it down by what you are looking for from the company.....pay, hometime, van, reefer, flat, benefits, etc...
Take a lot of time and search through this forum. There is a wealth of information to be found on all aspects of truck driving, and then some. Go to the companies website of the ones that you find interest in. Best of luck to you. -
I think you're going to find almost any company is going to require you to take a refresher course. If you've been out of this industry for two years, you're almost guaranteed to have to go back.
I drove since 1972, but retired in 2007. 20 months later when I decided to go back to work, everyone told me I had to take a driving course.
So I did. Already had my CDL, but I had to start at the bottom like everyone else.
Find a company you want to work for and see what they require. Some may be a bit more lenient, but I never found them. -
i liked werner, worked 7 mos then started flatbed, i like it much more just don't expect to be able to afford anything for awhile.

KLLM is good. I am finishing my second week with trainer. Equipment is well taken care of. Most of the trucks 1-3 years old

You should be able to find a farmer hauling grain and what not OTR till you get the experience needed....Sure would beat going to a driving school....Just my cent and 1/2

I'm a wannabe that is considering seriously the lifestyle here in south central Minnesota. Do any of you know of a good company in my area that would risk hiring a newbie 47 yo woman with a totally clean driving record and dedicated?

Satch Have you tried Apergis Transport? He is good with taking on newbies, But please do not Apply if your expecting good pay out of them.
I am not 100% sure on this but i do believe location isnt a problem. the owner just wants a good hard driven non whining driver.Last edited: Sep 25, 2010
