I'm just starting out, and have received offers from Xpress USA, CRST, Warner, and Swift.

I'm in NH, and willing to drive anywhere, but don't want to get screwed. I know I have to put my time in, and I have no problem starting at the bottom and working my way up.

But I've got a wife, and 4 kids to think about. The wife is good with me being gone for months at a time if it comes down to that. As long as I'm making money I don't care.

I'm coming off a 2 yr lay off, with a 16 yr job. It's been a looong time since I've had to do this, and being new to this arena I would appreciate any advice you all could give me.

What's the best/worst companies to drive for? I've been reading horror stories about Swift, and Xpress USA. But those are out there about ANY company.

    Anyone?

Is there a company with a terminal anywhere near you ??

That area up there can be tough for drivers !!

Do you have a CDL yet ?

IF you can get to a truck stop maybe you could talk to drivers of various companies and see what they have to say?, just remember there is good and bad in all companies, and of course read the good/bad co. info here, take a moment to digest it and decide which one you can "live with" cuz thats about what ya have to do til ya get the experience to move on down the road to a company you think fits you better.

i have found as i have been looking around that a lot of the flatbed companies say they will get you home more often...tmc(out of IA) says something about 46 weekends a year i think...pgt(out of PA) says home at least 2 weekends a months so if you dont mind flatbedding that maybe something to check into...just a thought...oh yeah both take students...and both pay percentage not miles just something else to think about...by the way i am going to start with pgt next week on nov. 8th...i can let you know how it goes but it will be a few weeks before i know because i have to go out with a trainer for about a month...good luck...

I would try to find some other kind of work. A wife and 4 kids. You will never see them as a truck driver. Plus in your area there isn't an abundance of freight lanes. It's kind of like FL. So most companies are going to keep you out longer due to it being hard to get you home. If you are dead set on trucking look into reefer companies. Seafood and Xmas trees are NE commodities. You may want to ask some flatbedders but I believe a lot of Granite (rocks) are hauled out of there. Good luck. Stay away from the mega-carriers! (Swift, werner, england etc...) Welcome to the forum.

I bit the bullet and agreed to go to orientation in PA for werner. I leave the 23rd of Nov.

I know I won't be home much. Not afraid of work. Use to work 12 hr night shifts, 6 days a week for 16 yrs. Got laid off 2 yrs ago, and nothing else out there but retail and I HATE retail.

    Gotta do something.

Just a thought, but you will actually be out longer than normal. This is due to living in NH. Your time out is probably going to look like two months at a time. I would really do some research and find a carrier with a terminal near you or a company that has freight lanes in your area. For example: I ran for Central Ref. and they did catfish runs out of Mississippi up the east coast and ended in Maine. Also this time of year they do Xmas trees out of Maine,NH and VT. Another gig would be to find a company that is running seafood out of Maine and Portsmouth. Not sure where you are in NH but in Boston is the huge market and a lot of produce and flowers go there.

Point is, don't give up or just pick anyone to have a job. You will end up never getting home and wanting to quit the first time you do. You do have to put forth a little more effort. Give me a few minutes and I will find you some companies hiring out of NH.
