So I'm in Ft. Lauderdale Florida and want to get started OTR early next year. I have 3 options at the moment from what I can tell. 1. Attend this fly by night school that says they get get me my CDL with their 10 hour course, 2. Attend a college in my area, they want $1500 up front which I won't have until Febuary (Income Tax) the school is a 9 week 320 hour program that doesn't start until March, or go to Swift Academy (no immediate out of pocket cost and I can start school ASAP). I want to work for Knight eventually. What would you do?

If you want to drive for knight then drive for knight I think they offer a training to get you're CDL

Don't do the fly by CDL schools you will never get a job that's worth it.

I would say go to swift but as you said you want to work for knight

Wait and pay the $1500. It's not a big price.. you'll still be local and can work PT at night to have an income while you're in school and learning.

Then , you'll be trained PROPERLY (320 vs 10) and will not be tied down to a "contract" with a training carrier because they "learned you the biz".

In this industry , being able to control your own destiny is paramount.

    Good luck to you.

Also have to look at where he is located and the fact he wants to run for knight so why pay out of pocket if his first choice will pay

True. .. but I was just going by the OP saying the $1500 was at a local college so I knew it would be close to home and an income stream could be maintained while training.

A Knight Course , if accepted, would trump it all.

Why do you want to work for knight? Thats a pretty low goal. But if that's what you want, as people have said, knight has its own school, go there.

Knight has their own CDL school.
Best option is the college cdl program. Get all the endorsements while there plus a TWIC ID card.
You will have dozens of options for companies with the college program.

I'm in the same boat I also think i want to go with Knight but i'm in PA i don't think they have a school at the Carlise PA terminal so i have to get my CDL first. I have an appointment tomorrow at my local careerlink to see if the WIA program will pay for my CDL schooling. If not then i'm pretty much forced to go to a company sponsored training because i don't have $3k+ for these schools.
