While I agree with you on this, most two lane roads don't have on and off ramps. And the side roads coming off of the two lane road I was looked barely wide enough to fit to smart card beside each other. Not that I am arguing with you. I'm just saying that my choices were limited to say the least. I do appreciate the advice though. For a while, I was getting the impression that driving a truck was an exclusive club. Now I know that's not that case. Anyway, sorry for jumping off subject a little bit.

I will admit that I was not quite on my game when this happened. I had been running all day and the load was a hot load. So, yes, I was a little tired. Not to the point of being dangerous. However, I had already made up my mind that I was gonna shut down for the night after I got the load delivered. However, all this happened and almost totally drained me out. And the deer(s) that ran out front of me after I got rolling again startled me enough that if dispatch started getting on me about why it was late, I would have told them that once it got delivered, I was shutting down for a 34. Needless to say, I didn't have to do that and once I got the load delivered, I got a nice long 912 mile load assignment. And it is only about 25000 or 26000 pounds. So, maybe, just maybe things are smoothing out again.

You were the only one who could choose, I was not there so please don't take it like I was faulting you, I was not. Believe me we've all had our moments. I was in Needles next to Carls Jr, and I could see a truck across the field pulling out and leaving, I thought it was a good idea to just drive across the field as the other driver said he did on the radio, found out it was not a good idea when I sunk it to the frame rails, 450 bucks is what it cost me to get out of there. SO we all try to learn from each other.

I understand. I also apologize for seeming like I was thinking you were faulting me. I thought that I forgot to mention that I was on a two lane road. Please forgive me if I come across as an a-hole.

I can't say you made any serious mistakes. And if you had the fact you are asking how to handle it.next time should earn you a stay of execution unless your actions caused real harm & damage. You can't learn what is serious or trivial unless you have experience or ask questions. So, good for you.

I just don't consider stopping on the travelled lane unless I think continuing will damage the truck or injure others. I only stop on a full width interstate highway shoulder except for an emergency like the truck shedding metal parts, fire, serious health symptoms like fainting, chest pain, and probably a bathroom emergency. The last item might being a big surprise, not slowly building discomfort. And for the above, if I can see a possible spot further than a traveled lane I would aim for that instead of the shoulder. When vehicles driving at or above speed limits hit a stopped vehicle it will likely be fatal for someone.

The driver has to make the decision but convenience and "I wonder if..." are mostly not enough for me park even on a full shoulder. If the road has less than a full shoulder then only stop if things are very serious and/or there is good visibilty behind you so that vehicles approaching you can see you well before they reach you. It hardly matters what the road in front of you looks like but it is very important what you can see so you are not a stopped surprise for distracted car/truck drivers or cause of a serious crash. Pick a stopping place based on visibility of you to others, not based on easy of getting back underway. That's basically why SOOOO many idiots stop just beyond the crest of a hill so they are invisible until passing traffic is right on them. Starting to move again by getting an assist down the hill will be hard to explain in court if a car hits you in the rear while you are parked.

If I had dual tires, not super singles, and a dual tire blewout or went flat I would likely drive to the shoulder of the next on-ramp before stopping even if the road has a full shoulder. No full width shoulder = almost no non-emergency reason to stop in my mind.

You make the call. Good luck.

That is a lot to think on. The only good thing about where I pulled over is there was at least a half mile in front of me and behind that there were no curves on. The visibility was a non issue considering I had all my exterior lights on. Unless someone was as blind as a bat, they couldn't not see me. However, I digress. All I can say is that I made a poor decision on where I chose to pull over. Not gonna happen again unless I have no other choice, i.e. a severe mechanical issue that would prevent me from going any further that requires a tow truck anyway, or drastic health problems. I will go so far as to say that I will hold my bathroom needs until I can use an actual bathroom if I can. I always keep two or three empty bottles for number ones. The number twos are a different story. I still haven't quite figured out how to deal with those if I have no access to a toilet. And so far I been luck on those.

Absolutely!! NEVER stop on the road unless you are in such a bind you have no other choice. If a cop observes you doing this you are subject to catching a charge. I know I said in an earlier post I stopped on the road. I also did not mention I was pulling a crap trailer and had an airline to break and my trailer spring brakes locked up. If I had been on one of those really wide shoulders I would have got off the road.
If you are driving on such a road. You hear a bang sound start to feel the rig and pay close attention to your gauges. If the truck will still move and you still have air and the truck is not shaking like heck just slow down till you can find a good place to park. Over time a driver can start to know by sounds and feel if they need to stop ASAP.

Good point. That's what I am gonna do from now on. I hear a strange sound but nothing else is out of the ordinary, I will slow down some to see if I can feel or hear anything else out of sorts. If not, I will continue with some caution until I can pull over without fear. If I do hear other weird noises or feel something strange, depending on how bad it is, I may or may not pull over immediately. As you said, that will take time to develop the sharp sense for it. Now, all of this reminds me of the time I was a company driver and I started hearing a periodic but steady tapping sound at low road speeds. It turned out to be a driveshaft support bearing that had gotten worn out to the point of having practically disappeared. Luckily, I was on my home and was about five miles out from the house. It's all good though. I just want to say thank you to everyone for your thoughts and advice. I'm sure I will need them again on other things in the future. I just hope it will be something trivial, such as dealing with an idiotic shipper or receiver. Hehe. :D

Anyway, I gotta get some sleep. I got a long day tomorrow and I wanna be well rested. I will be posting threads somewhere on here every so often about different things to start a discussion or just have general banter about things we see, hear, do, or just some random subject. I hope y'all won't be mad if I do. Anyway, to all a good night. And keep the rubber on the road and not in the mud like I did. :laughing-guffaw:
