@BM 58 Now thats what im looking to hear! Thank you! I was thinking to find work, then rent a truck first so I dont buy and then be stuck if its not for me.

But going to work for someone would be cheaper, I will look into that first.

    Basket weaver?! Hahaha!

@roundhouse I have a budget set with reserves in regards to renting a box truck first. But my budgeting can always be better.

I have a few quotes from insurance companies, however no customers or loads lined up.

Any best practices for budgeting or getting loads lined up?

Cant help you there as I have no experience in that

Why are you interested in box trucks instead of 18 wheelers or hotshots or sprinter van expedited freight or other forms of trucking ?

@roundhouse 18 wheelers I originally wanted, but the investment was high for something im unsure of, even with rent or leasing.

So I figured I start on a lower platform.

I hear hotshots make more money then box trucks if business is run correctly. Never thought about sprinter vans though.

What other forms of trucking are there other then 18 wheelers and box trucks? (Newbie here)

You need to work for someone else for a bit to learn the business.

You need a mentor. It’s risky to just jump into a business with no experience running the business .

Would you take the money you have saved up and open a restaurant?

    open a hair salon?

    open a pet store?
    Buy a rental house ?
Open a transmission repair shop ?

you need to know how to make money in whatever business before you start spending your money to start it

A little bit of advice that is earned by trial and error.

never get into something that has low future potential and high saturation.

anyone can afford a 26’ old uhaul and haul crap for people, no cdl means little, drivers aren’t quality, and most of the time it is labor intensive so many drivers don’t want to work for what you can pay them.

@Ridgeline you bring up some good points. I feel the most potential will come from 18 wheelers.
I wouldnt say its a safer investment, but definitely more upside.

Is there any other transportation you would consider that has similar potential as 18 wheelers?

I want to be in logistics, I believe in the industry and its future. I just need an in

Don’t rent or buy anything until you work for someone for a bit. Watch your fuel mileage and if you have any access to invoices check and see what he’s making on delivering stuff. It may not pay enough to be worth the trouble but at least you will know before you buy any equipment.

I know a few guys that use sprinter vans and mini vans to haul expedited freight.

I know guy with a sprinter claims he clears 70 cents a mile after he pays for fuel.
I’m sure he paid cash for the sprinter at an auction cheap.
I have no idea which load boards or brokers he uses to get the freight though

also , reading back over my reply it sounds kind of rude and I didn’t mean it lot be rude.
I was just making an example asking the question : “ would you try to start another type of business with zero experience in that business ?”

in trucking , you can lose your shirt in hurry if things go badly for a few weeks.

trust me . I’ve been there and done that.
