It's not a difficult job....But It requires a high degree of skill to do it right on all levels.
That is what so many do not understand! To just sit there and hold a steering wheel...Well, You could probably train a ######' chimp to do that if you worked at it long enough!

A "Real Driver" as I call them has good solid customer relations skills and can assist in resolving problems "onsite" without 40 calls to his "very busy" dispatcher.

That driver actually knows what he's looking for when he does a "REAL" pre-trip and not just a "kick the tire with your flip flops" walk around.

That driver knows what his actions behind the wheel will cause the freight in or on the trailer to do.

That driver understands how to "operate" the equipment to its best potential rather than just drive it to death with no understanding at all of what he's doing wrong.

That driver "cares" about his company and his shipper/receivers needs.

That driver knows how to read traffic situations and see potential problems long before they become a foregone conclusion.

That driver learns how to build and keep a cusion of space between him and the vehicles in front of him regardless the level of traffic.

That driver understands that as a professional, It is his responsibility to compensate for the actions of those around him in traffic so that their mistakes don't become his problem.

This is a very small sampling of what a skilled professional driver should be doing...There is much, much more.

    Are YOU that driver?

    Man..
I was told on another thread that if you're are real driver, you must go to the proper truck stops. What's a man to do...

There is a lot more to me than what has been revealed on this site. Having owned five trucks, as many as three at one time, and having spent several years some time back hauling 14' wide loads into metropolitan construction sites, I actually happen to know what you are talking about. So YES, I have been and can be "that driver". Thanks for asking. In just one week back I was already running circles around some of these so called professionals. I was being singled out by customers for special loads and receiving complements from the broker employing me.

Of course now we have strayed off tangent a little. Or have we? This was about newbie attitudes originally. Maybe just keep in mind, that newbie might not always be as inexperienced as you might assume.

I agree and some of the other things not listed; A good driver knows how to get the most out of his fuel mileage and how it affects pocketbooks, how to change a light bulb (and does it) and carries some basic tools and supplies and uses them. Im sure we could go on and on with a list but where I think you will make your biggest mistake (after the other big mistake you already did) is thinking that you, with no experience can just become an o/o under your own authority and make it. I could go under my own authority but I dont. Not because im scared, its because its far from easy and I think more experience as an o/o under someone else's authority is needed, for myself, before taking that step. Not trying to be negative but its much easier learning on someone else's dime before becoming an o/o and costing you everything, maybe even your cdl or someone else's life as you havent put down the pot pipe yet.

Sigh . . . decisions, decisions! What should one drive today, the Maybach, the Bentley, the Aston Martin, the Lamborgini, the Ferrari or the Rolls? . . .what a dilemma, huh?!!

Wow! How awesome are you?!! One trait that you haven't listed for yourself is humility, huh?

Kinda makes one wonder why such a "super trucker" would choose a handle like "COrookie" when they registered on this site this month. Clearly one with such awesome abilities is no "rookie"! Freudian slip? Or maybe that's an attempt to show a hint of humility, huh?

I actually thought I did pretty well not bringing it up. Reason being, I didn't come here to prove anything to you, I just had some questions.

Since nobody, or almost nobody here could keep on the topic, and the constant lording of "I am a super trucker, you are stupid and incompetant" was the main theme, I figured a retort was in order.

Now the cat is out of the bag and the best you can do is toss out some more insults? Impressive right there folks! Does it make you feel better going down that road? Does it really offend you that I might know something about trucking?

Maybe if folks stuck to their own business and simply tried to help out a fellow human being when asked, sparing the preaching, we could avoid the genital measuring contests. It certainly isn't a contest I started.

Who cares. If you want to stay on subject the op was tired of newbie attitudes and how they think they can do drugs and still drive in this industry. From that it turned into whether it is right and just for it to be illegal. Whether that happens or not I'd almost guarantee dot will still make it a rule that you can't do it. So bottom line is again they don't mix and if you want to drive DONT DO IT!
