I'm an unemployed construction manager. My state is offering a grant to cover the cost of CDL-A training. Have traveled coast to coast and border to border during my construction career, so I'm no stranger to the road. It's time to find new career. Construction industry gone to $#!* in my area. Feel trucking best suits my personality.
20 years married, no children, spotless driving record, and drug-free. Would really like to long haul/OTR. Won't mind being away from home for months at a time (even holidays). Wife is onboard with this.
Been doing exhaustive research on the net. Been sandbaggin' this forum for days now. Nothing like getting good info straight from the horse's mouth.
Can any of the experienced drivers here advise me? It would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, go for it. Free schooling, then getting hired, and you're on your way. School will have recruiters visit and give you their schpiel.

Don't be misled that you will "see America" from your cab.

You will see a LOT of open spaces, cities, and "roadside scenery".... but not the kind of things that a RV'er would see.

You will pass "NEAR" a lot of great places.
    Maybe see them from afar.
But very few of the "grand vistas" are right on the roadside, and you won't be able to go there in a truck.

The only place I had no problem getting to was Salt Lake.
Dropped my trailer at the pilot with permission and Bobtailed out to the Island with wife and daughter for the afternoon.
But that was MY truck so no hoops about it from company.

    Don't misread me though.
You WILL see a lot of the country, and a lot of interesting stuff.
More than you would sitting at a desk in some office.

Seems like you're decision is made from the way you wrote your post.

    What are you waiting for?

Get into school, learn and practice as much as possible and hit the road!

    Good luck to you 'bullet.

tks medicineman. wouldn't think you'd have time or opportunity to see much along the way. the load's got to get to its destination afterall, hopefully on schedule. do, however, have a yearnin for the open road. got no fantastical expectations about becoming a driver. it is a job, and a hard one at that. my stepdad (big dipper) ran otr for US Pipe till his heart gave out. i've seen first-hand the physical effects of long-haul trucking on a man.
that being said, i've had to wear many hats during the course of my career. none of which fit very well. learned early on that 99.9% of the employees, customers, clients... i dealt with had almost zero tolerance for the truth. so i had to learn how to smile and politely and tell them what they wanted to hear. never could get use to the $#!* taste it left in my mouth.
I am most at peace when i'm alone. never cared much for talk just for the sake of talk. don't get me wrong. i'm not antisocial, just particular about the company i keep and the words i chose.
Hoping the experienced drivers here will be willing toss some nuggets of wisdom my way along this journey. i fully expect, that starting out, my employment opportunities, compensation,... will be limited. i will, afterall, be starting at the bottom again. i will be learning a trade that is foreign to me, and will need all the help i can get.
